How to repair a sofa at home
When a person acquires new furniture, he rejoices like a child. But over time, the upholstery begins to lose its attractiveness: fade, tear. A new purchase is not an option, therefore, it is recommended to pay attention to do-it-yourself sofa repair.
Replacing foam rubber in the sofa with your own hands
You can replace outdated foam rubber yourself or invite a specialist for this. The first option is cheaper. Moreover, this process is quite easy. Initially, it is worth deciding: you just need to replace the material or drag the entire sofa completely. To do this, it is recommended to assess the furniture: wear, depression, appearance.
Replacement with a new one
Many people are interested in the question: how to replace foam rubber with your own hands simply and quickly in the couch. This process consists of several stages. The first step is to remove the sides and preferably detach the back. Then you need to remove the transformation system.
Note! It is recommended to take a photo of each stage in order to eliminate the risk of error during the assembly process. It is advisable to make notes on the details, thanks to which it will be possible to understand in the future which side they were filmed from.
It is worth inspecting all the details at the same time. Some may also need replacement or repair. For example, if the furniture starts to creak or make unpleasant sounds, then the plywood should be checked. It is possible that you will have to glue it and fix it with nails.
Removing the upholstery is done using a flat screwdriver designed to remove the staples, or a staple remover. After that, it must be washed and ironed. Thus, it will be useful for a new pattern if you want to sew it yourself. Also, such processes will restore the appearance of the material, if it is still completely normal and does not need to be replaced.
Now we proceed directly to replacing the foam rubber itself.
The cut filler should be laid on the wooden base of each element, firmly fixed and secured with special brackets using a construction stapler. A thicker layer can increase the volume of the armrests and backrests. But do not get too carried away, because then you will need more fabric for upholstery and the removed one will no longer fit in size.
Additional Information! For the back and sides, you can use cheaper and softer foam rubber. These areas are subject to a minimum load.
For the next stage, you need to take any fabric that is similar in density to canvas. Then perform a tight fitting for each element separately. Thus, the filler will fit more evenly and tightly to the product. It will also help keep the foam from getting dirty.
What else can replace it
Instead of foam rubber, you can also use a spring block, polyurethane foam, synthetic winterizer, felt, latex, periotek, durafil, lamellas as a filler for a sofa. Each has its own specific properties:
- Polyurethane foam - the material is completely safe and environmentally friendly, has an excellent balance of hardness and softness. The disadvantages include the fact that over time it begins to deform and becomes too rigid.
- Sintepon - does not cause an allergic reaction, has a low price, is environmentally friendly, resilient and elastic. Its operational life is not long, it is better to use it only for armrests, cushions and backrests, and not for the entire product; over time, it can begin to clump into lumps.
- Felt - high durability, affordable cost, uniform load distribution, does not cause allergies, has a flat surface, perfectly distributes heat. Cons: insects can start in it, it also grows moldy over time, since it is not resistant to moisture.
- Latex - is able to restore its shape in a short time, is non-toxic, follows the contours of the body, the service life is about twenty years, is breathable, hypoallergenic. It has only one drawback - high cost.
Important! Some sofas can have a combination of filling. Therefore, when replacing it, this must be taken into account, or, as an option, only one kind should be used.
DIY sofa spring block repair
Do-it-yourself repair of the spring block in the sofa does not take much time and is not a laborious process. The first step is to separate the sides of the product. To do this, it is advised to use a wrench. The upholstery is removed with pliers. Once the mattress is pulled out, the size of the problem can be estimated. The springs should first be wiped off, and then carefully inspected.
Broken parts are removed with pliers and replaced: the old part is cut with pliers, a new one is put in its place, then tied with a rope to the rest of the elements.
DIY corner sofa repair
To repair a corner sofa, the first step is to completely disassemble its frame. In this case, it is advisable to number all the details. After that, you need to prepare the fabric for the constriction.
Along the way (if the need arises), you can replace some parts with new ones. When assembling the device, all elements are coated with glue. The fixation is carried out using a cruciform metal tongue.
According to the old standards, parts are cut out of plywood. The frame is coated with glue, then plywood is applied to it and fixed with a stapler. The springs are fixed with the same tool so that they remain in one place. In this way, the necessary parts are replaced. After that, everything should be collected in its original form.
DIY sofa frame repair
The frame carries the main load, so if damaged elements appear in it, then it is better to replace them with new parts. To do this, measure them, and then make the necessary product in the carpentry shop. You can do it yourself or find a master. The connection is made with wood glue, but for greater efficiency, it is also recommended to use metal dowels.
First, you should glue the connection, and then clamp it in a vice. Plywood is used as a base, the thickness of which is about four millimeters. For better reliability, the joints are made on jumpers. The joints are recommended to be supported with a beam.
How to replace the spring block in the sofa
Instead of a spring block, you can use such types of fillers as foam rubber, felt or synthetic winterizer.
The first one is an elastic material, provides elasticity, can serve as both a softening and a support product, while it is perfectly air-permeable and has a fine-mesh structure.
The second one is environmentally friendly, durable and reliable. Due to the increased strength, its service life is significantly extended.
The third one has a low price, is environmentally friendly, does not cause an allergic reaction, resilient and elastic. In this form, a fungus or any other harmful bacteria does not start.
How to replace the skin
Replacement of the wrap consists of several stages. The first step is to remove the pillows, backrest, decor and sides. Then the furniture is separated from the base, that is, the seat is disassembled. After that, the old fabric is separated, but do not rush to throw it away, because it will be convenient to make a new pattern on it. The next step is to remove dust and dirt, as well as replace the foam rubber.
Now a pattern is being made, be sure to leave a little space for the seams. Details are fastened with needles and sewn on a typewriter. The new upholstery is attached separately to each element. Everything should be done very carefully to avoid tension. It is advised to use a stapler for this, there should be a distance of about four centimeters between the staples.
Repairing the Transformation Mechanism
At home, you can repair the transformation mechanism.
For example:
- Sofa book - the mechanism is attached to the table, a broken rivet is drilled out. A special compass is used to select the correct size. If it was not possible to repair with the rivet, then use a nut or bolt.
- Accordion - rollers are replaced, but for this, the first step is to find wheels of exactly the same size and height. To do this, the mounting axle must be drilled out. It is easy to replace it with regular bolts to better fix the rollers. You can also replace the lamellas: drill out a rivet, change the product, fasten with bolts.
- Click-gag - the spring is replaced, which over time begins to deform. Ordinary bolts are used instead of old rivets.
As you can see from the above, do-it-yourself sofa repair will not cause any difficulties, but it will save money. It's relatively easy to make. This process will not take long.
