Dismantling the corner sofa for transportation
Moving is always stressful. But it can intensify many times when the understanding comes that the worst is yet to come - the sofa! Many people literally give up at the thought of what is yet to come. However, the devil is not so terrible.
There are recommendations and schemes on how to do this quickly and without problems. The main thing is to understand how to disassemble the corner sofa, and the rest is already a matter of technology.

Specificity and differences
In the simplest case, such a sofa consists of three key parts: central, corner and sidewalls. At the same time, despite the huge variety of offered models, there are three main types of corner sofas:
- L-shaped two-piece. As a rule, the central part is complemented by a solid corner element, which is usually an ottoman, less often a sofa. In fact, this solution provides two full berths.
- L-shaped three-section. A modified scheme, which differs from the previous one by the presence of a corner insert. That is, the corner part is connected to the central part with the help of a kind of "mediator". By the type of execution, it is most often a sofa.
- U-shaped. The difference lies in the presence of corner sections installed on both sides of the center section.
In addition to the structural scheme, sofas also differ in the type of mechanism, the method of fixing the sidewalls and the presence of additional (optional) elements: drawers, cabinets, bar pockets, a table.
How to disassemble a corner sofa
Dismantling such structures, in principle, is not difficult, however, due to the cumbersomeness of the component parts, it is advisable to do this together, although it is quite possible to disassemble some models yourself.
What is needed for this
First of all, you need an assembly plan - it will also come in handy for disassembly. If there is none, it is necessary either to independently analyze the schematic diagram (which is not always possible), or to search the World Wide Web.
Based on the universal concepts of the structure of modular structures, you will most likely need:
- Screwdrivers. Better to prepare both slotted and cross.
- Open-end wrench set.
- Screwdriver.
- Hammer.
- Containers for storing small parts.
Note! Since it is sometimes necessary to disassemble the sofa in more detail than is provided by the manufacturer, you may need a construction stapler and staples to it, since some of the fastening elements are under the upholstery.
Existing differences
Despite the small number of schematic diagrams, corner sofas differ mainly in the design of the transformation mechanism. The most requested options are:
- "Dolphin". The organization of the berth is carried out using a roll-out platform, which is located below. The process is quite simple: the platform is pulled out from under the seat, and the attachment part is lifted using a special grip.
- "Book". The classic version, known since Soviet times. To unfold the sofa, you need to raise the seat and move it back until it clicks, and then return it to its place.
- "Eurobook". To unfold into the "bed" state, it is enough to roll back the central part and lower the back. An excellent option that makes it equally convenient to both disassemble the corner sofa and use it every day.
- "Accordion". An unusual constructive solution, which, when unfolded, resembles stretching bellows of an accordion or a parted sloping roof of a house. The backrest, seat and auxiliary section form a single unit, supported by a three-piece articulated frame.
- Sedaflex. The organization of the berth is carried out using a separate unit located under the seat, which includes a mechanism and a soft substrate. Differs in the number of frame sections. A similar principle of operation is implemented in the so-called "American" scheme, as well as in the "French clamshell".
- "Pantograph" or "Tick-Tock". The transformation process resembles the movement of a pendulum. Virtually the same performance with the "Eurobook". The only difference is that the central part moves in an arc, not in a straight line.
- Click-Clack. Non-collapsible option. Unfolding is carried out with the help of a small effort directed away from oneself (or towards oneself). Actually, the name reflects the characteristic sound of the fixation mechanism when changing position.
How to disassemble a corner sofa for transportation scheme of work
Before proceeding with the dismantling of structural elements, it is required to organize the workspace, freeing the room from all that is superfluous. In addition, armrests, covers, pillows - anything that can be removed without the use of tools - must be removed from the sofa.
In the general case, the disassembly process takes place according to the following scheme:
- Installing the sofa in a comfortable position for work. It is desirable to have free access to all of its sections.
- A brief analysis of the methods of fastening structural elements to each other. At this stage, it will become clear what tools you may need.
- Removing the sidewalls. Often, the side parts are installed using hooks. In this case, they just need to be removed. If the fastening is more complicated, use the prepared tool. Some structures hold the sidewalls together using a beam that runs behind the backrest.
- Divide main sections. If the backrest or seat allows dismantling, remove them. Dismantle the corner section in accordance with the design features (it can be non-separable). Remove the rising top from the ottoman.
- Dismantle the transformation mechanism. Since you need to disassemble the sofa into as many parts as possible, this stage can present a rather unpleasant surprise. The fact is that some solutions do not provide for the removal of the mechanism without complete disassembly of the structure. In this case, it is best to leave it as it is.
- Arrange the parts in a convenient order for packaging.
What's the best way to pack?
In order not to damage soft parts or polished wooden inserts during transportation, all individual elements must be well packed. The most commonly used packaging is corrugated cardboard, stretch film or cellophane in a roll, as well as scotch tape.
First of all, you need to pack the sides. If they will be transported together, it is better to shift them with a sheet of thin fiberboard or corrugated cardboard. The latter is desirable to use when preparing the mechanism for transportation, which is fixed in such a way as to exclude spontaneous disclosure.
Then the entire assembly is lined with corrugated cardboard and pulled together with twine or tape, as appropriate. The same applies to a box with a back if they are one piece.
How to disassemble a corner sofa?
In each specific case, the disassembly process strongly depends on the concept and type of transformation mechanism, which can have a significant impact on both the time costs and the complexity of the work.
Type "Eurobook"
The simplest, from the point of view of dismantling, design. Disassembly takes place according to the generally accepted scheme. The first step is to remove the seat. These sofas are usually simply removed. Then you need to disassemble the sidewalls.
An open-end wrench may be needed here. The backrest and bedding box are one piece.
Pantograph type
This type is derived from the previous model and is parsed in a similar way. The only difference is the folding mechanism. Therefore, before disassembling the sofa, you need to choose the right tool for dismantling it.
Next, you should adhere to the scheme described above.
Dolphin type
Since this structure is equipped with a roll-out platform, the dismantling process will be different. First of all, you need to remove the rear screen, below the backrest. This will open up access to the inside of the seat shell.
Here you need to use a tool and separate both parts (a flashlight may be needed). The sides are removed in the usual way.
With the mechanism "Accordion"
In this case, you need to start by removing the sidewalls. Such structures are usually provided with a tie beam that extends behind the backrest and supports opposing side sections. It must be removed first.
Since the three-section mechanism of the "Accordion" is mounted on a box-pallet, before disassembling the corner sofa, you will need to remove the headboard from the grooves and move the entire structure further away for ease of use. The final step will be to dismantle the box: you will have to turn it over and unscrew the bolts or, depending on the design, release the clamps. The result should be three separate elements: a transformation mechanism, two sidewalls and, in fact, a box for linen.
Precautionary measures
First of all, you should adhere to safety precautions when working with the tool. All possible measures must be taken to avoid injury when disassembling bulky and heavy parts of the structure. Better to do it together.
In addition, many sofas have a special mount that uses branded hardware and mounting elements. It is advisable to put them in a separate place. It is also required to use hand tools carefully so as not to damage the upholstery or scratch the armrests.
In some cases, it is allowed to leave parts of the structure in an assembled state if they cannot be successfully separated, while brute force cannot be used.
How to transport correctly?
Transportation regulations assume that all parts are properly packed and prepared for movement (have gripping units). It is necessary to make sure once again that there is a diagram of how to disassemble the corner sofa for transportation. In addition, it is required to ensure that all small parts and fasteners are transported in a separate container.
In general, the rules for the transportation of oversized products recommend doing the following:
- Before ordering a furniture van, measure the dimensions of the largest parts.
- Check the reliability of fixing the movable units.
- The largest structures should be loaded first.
- Arrange the elements of the sofa in the body so that the heaviest parts are at the bottom.
- Provide additional fixation in order to prevent displacement of parts and assemblies during movement.
How to disassemble a sofa is clear, but how to assemble it?
If the sofa was disassembled on its own, the assembly process should take place in the reverse order of the dismantling process:
- Arrange all parts according to the existing scheme.
- You should start with the linen drawer and backrest.
- Mount the transformation mechanism.
- Attach the corner piece.
- Attach the sidewalls.
- Check the strength of the structure and the functionality of the mechanism.
Important! During the disassembly process, it is important to record the sequence of operations, for example, periodically filming what is happening on the phone. In addition, it makes sense to draw up your own diagram of the parts, putting the appropriate markings on them.
The more functional the sofa, the more parts it can be disassembled. As you can see, there is nothing super complicated in this matter. The main thing is to understand how to disassemble the corner sofa, as well as to have a diagram, the right tool and an assistant at hand.
With proper handling and careful transportation, taking all precautions, the sofa will easily slide into a new place. Exactly the same as it was before!
