Varieties
Upholstered furniture is a favorite resting place for pets and children; it is purchased for a long time. During this time, the upholstery can deteriorate, get bored. Textiles or leather will last longer if there is a shell that follows the contours, bends of interior items.
Manufacturers offer standard covers of various textures and colors. A small overview of the luxurious and practical materials used in modern design will help you decide which fabric to choose for your sofa cover.
To get a tandem of style and functionality, all criteria for evaluating furniture cases should be taken into account.
What is a sofa cover for?
It is difficult to imagine modern apartments without upholstered furniture on which children and adults can comfortably sit. It is a pity to change the furniture when the upholstery made of woven materials, eco-leather loses its former attractiveness.
A cover can preserve a decent look of furniture - a product that is worn on a sofa to protect the upholstery from contamination, fumes from cigarettes, and premature wear. It will be possible to avoid abrasion of the fibers, the formation of ugly puffs from cat claws.
For reference. In order for the textiles to fully comply with the general style of the room, color combinations are chosen to match the color of curtains or light curtains.
Sizes of covers
Furniture makers in the manufacture of products adhere to generally accepted standards. Ready-made removable casings are sewn for typical interior items, taking into account the variability of the elements. Small differences in sofa models are leveled out by cover fasteners, tension regulators, a special elastic texture - soft cases take any shape.
There are covers for non-standard furniture with high backs, wide armrests. Before buying a cover from a sofa, the main geometric parameters are measured:
- the width of the back, side, armrest;
- length, height and depth of the seat.
According to these characteristics, they select or independently sew new leather or woven casings.
Note! A special category of decorative textiles is capes for corner modifications, they are made composite, for each element separately.
Color solutions
Soft furnishings are always the key to furnishing. With the help of textiles or other materials, you can radically change the situation, make it pompous or extraordinary.
Designers distinguish two color categories of furniture:
- monochrome neutral (milky, gray, beige tones) and juicy (yellow, red, green, orange, fashionable lilac or purple shades);
- with a pattern, images are chosen desaturated, small or medium-sized (large prints are acceptable only for long and bulky sofas).
A few tips for combining with the design of the room:
- monochrome implies a single color scheme for the finishing of walls and cover material, only shades differ, a subtle pattern is possible that creates volume;
- neutral colors do not cause any thermal sensations, balance the warm or cold tones of the environment, serve as a background for the perception of other elements of the entourage;
- the combined design option is an emphasis on the sofa, this requires rich colors, bright, saturated shades that give dynamics.
For reference. Milky shades of white, beige-yellow, beige-brown, pale shades of chocolate, coffee are considered universal.
Varieties of sofa cover models
Models are distinguished by colors and various features inherent in upholstered furniture, the number of seats. Manufacturers offer casings for models:
- straight lines of various lengths and widths;
- angular, it is important to take into account the rotation of the structure;
- U-shaped;
- with a different number of seats from two (canapes) to four or five;
- with backs or pillows;
- with armrests and eurobooks.
There are models with a skirt (the so-called lower frill), universal with a high coefficient of elongation (eurocovers), fragmented (only abraded parts are closed).
According to the degree of protection of furniture textiles, there are:
- vandal-proof dense weaving, no traces of claws, sharp objects;
- waterproof with special water-repellent impregnation.
Important! When ordering individual options, it is necessary to take into account the possible shrinkage of the fabric after washing. It is better to immediately carry out wet and heat treatment of the material.
What fabric is used for sewing sofa covers
The textile industry produces fabrics from natural and synthetic fibers of various densities, weaving strength, thickness, structure, and water absorption. When choosing a material for a sofa cover, take into account not only the colors and appearance of textiles, but also the pros and cons of the fabric.
Special requirements are imposed on casings for upholstered furniture. The fabric must be safe for people and animals. Choose canvases with persistent dyes so that the material does not fade when water accidentally gets in.
Important! Special properties are assessed for textiles for covers: the tendency to get dirty, the ability to cough (form pellets, swipe).
Jacquard
A canvas with a complex or simple pattern looks luxurious and noble. For weaving, up to 24 threads of various colors and shades are used. They produce jacquard of various colors from natural fibers mixed with synthetics.
The fabric is dense, does not wrinkle, technologies have been developed to increase the resistance to cleaning:
- thermal coloring (thermohackard);
- impregnation for the formation of a protective film (scotchguard).
There are fleecy counterparts, furniture in cases and capes made of velvet-jacquard look noble and rich. Jacquard remains the most demanded material for interior decoration in loft, modern and high-tech styles.
Velvet
The fleecy material with a pile on the front side is made of natural or artificial silk, hypoallergenic bamboo. The texture, pleasant to the touch, is quite durable, allows air to pass through, keeps its shape, does not shrink when washing, and is well cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
The disadvantages are the tendency to burnout under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, prolonged drying. Dust and small particles of dirt accumulate in the villi.Despite the shortcomings, velvet sofa covers are also appropriate for classic interiors, as in the Rococo and Baroque styles. Perfectly combined with Venetian plaster wall decoration.
Eco leather
High-tech synthetics completely imitate various types of natural leather, does not have a characteristic odor, slightly stretches, tightly fitting the contours of interior items. For cleaning, special compounds are required that do not damage the surface film. The material burns out, is short-lived: it is wiped off with spots, it cannot be restored.
Eco-leather covers are short-lived, difficult to put on, bulky during storage, there are problems with cleaning. The textured film quickly collapses from contact with sweat marks, animal hair. The material is completely intolerant of chlorine-containing cleaning agents. This fabric is chosen by lovers of country style, ethnic trends.
Microfiber
Cloth made of densely woven microfibers retains dirt without forming stains, is easy to clean, absorbs moisture, and allows air to pass through. The popularity of such cases for sofas is explained by the unique properties of high-quality fabric, aesthetic appearance. Due to the unusual shape of the thread with a cross-section in the form of a star, a special texture is created that reflects the rays of light at a certain angle. The shade of the products changes depending on the lighting conditions.
The fabric does not deform, does not wrinkle, does not fade, has good strength, durability. For the manufacture of such covers, persistent dyes are used that are not afraid of ultraviolet light, washing, cleaning with special means.
Cons: the fabric cannot be ironed, washed at a high temperature, the neighborhood with fireplaces, heating radiators is undesirable. Microfiber is appropriate in any interior, it will ennoble it, add sophistication.
Velours
Medium-priced, low-pile material measures velvet. It is durable, does not wrinkle, is erased, is not demanding to care for. Despite its softness, it is quite durable, wear-resistant.
Manufacturers offer one-color shaped, smooth, printed, one-colored velor (the most luxurious texture). Minus - during long-term storage in a folded state, creases form on the canvas.
Other materials used
For upholstering furniture, sewing covers are also used:
- Linen with a smooth surface and a matte sheen. But this eco-friendly material is short-lived, wrinkles a lot, and is only suitable for summer light options.
- Plush is an inexpensive analogue of velvet, it quickly loses its appearance, the villi begin to fall out, a loose one is not designed for a constant load.
- Chenille is a modern, beautiful, but not practical, short-pile fabric, produced on a woven or adhesive basis. The main disadvantage is that it does not withstand tough use, cat's claws - puffs immediately remain.
- Boucle is a fashionable looped fabric made of synthetic fabrics that is poorly breathable. Sitting on a sofa with such a cover is hot and uncomfortable. But externally, the fabric looks great, it is often used for interior decoration.
For reference. When cutting a fleecy fabric, the direction of the pile should be taken into account, otherwise the pieces will appear of a different shade.
Which fabric is better
The most optimal option is determined, taking into account the complex of factors on which the life of the cover depends:
- the location of the sofa (proximity to the window, fireplace, radiators, dining area;
- the conditions of its operation (the number of family members, the hospitality of the owners, the presence of pets);
- functionality (when the furniture is a sleeping place, natural fibers are chosen; for the living room and dining room, you can choose multi-layer options or with impregnation).
Important! The canvas is chosen for the style of the interior, the taste preferences of the inhabitants of the dwelling are of great importance.
Preference is given to practical options that combine an attractive appearance and practicality (machine washable, ease of dressing). Jacquard practically does not stretch, but does not cough, is not prone to dirt, and repels moisture. The most commonly used flock or microfiber. Fabrics are pleasant to the touch, but not designed for frequent washing, they quickly lose their original beauty.
Note! Covers made from stretch versions of natural canvases fit well on furniture, do not wrinkle, exactly repeat all the outlines.
How to choose the right sofa cover
In stores, on sites, products are presented for angular and straight standard models produced by foreign and domestic manufacturers. All products can be divided into three groups.
- Covers - composite cover options for corner designs, stretched over each individual element or part of the sofa. Sewed from woven fabrics, attached:
- on an elastic band that fixes the shell around the perimeter, does not allow it to slip;
- Velcro, adjusting the overlap of the tapes, you can stretch the fabric.
Capes are good because they are designed for the most rubbing, and frequently used elements, easily replaceable, versatile. - Covers made of non-elastic materials for a specific model, precisely following the geometry of a straight or corner sofa. They stretch tightly, hold due to the fitting of the back of the sofa, are additionally fixed on the sides with lime trees, zippers, hooks, decorative elements.
- Eurocovers - elastic modifications of furniture casings. Versatile, comfortable, practical. Due to good stretching, they are suitable for a wide range of models. Easy to use, easy to wash, dry quickly. Made of fabric with acrylic, elastane or polyester additives.
When buying, the quality of the fabric is taken into account, it is advisable to use analogs with a high content of natural fibers, which have good throughput and breathe. The choice of color depends on many factors:
- seasons, in autumn, in winter, the interior is complemented with warm pastel colors that create an atmosphere of comfort; bright, juicy options are suitable for summer, refreshing the decoration of the room;
- purpose of the room: a) monochromatic models in light colors are chosen for the bedroom; b) for the living room - to match the decoration of the walls, ceiling; c) colorful options, sunny tones are appropriate in the nursery;
- the presence of pets, when there is a high risk of contamination, the upholstery is covered with dark or variegated practical fabrics, on which stains are not visible.
Important! The shell of furniture in the same color scheme with the design of the room will look harmonious.
Why rush to change your old favorite sofa for a new one? When puffs, stains, dirt appear on the upholstery, a cover will help to update the furniture. It will cost much less than a constriction. The detachable case is easier to clean and washable.
With the modern choice of fabrics, ready-made covers for sofas, there is always an option for the stylish decoration of the living room, bedroom, nursery. Textiles will give the interior a new sound, fill it with color, and become a bright accent of the room.
