Making an ottoman in the hallway with your own hands
A pouf is a compact and multifunctional piece of furniture. A variety of models and designs allows you to choose it for any interior. Knowing the necessary steps, you can make a pouf in the hallway with your own hands.
The choice of design and shape of the ottoman
The design of the pouf depends on the interior of the hallway. It should match the color and size of the rest of the furnishings. If necessary, the pouf is capable of performing several functions, depending on the chosen model.
Colour
It is better to make the pouf box the same color as the rest of the furniture in the hallway. The lid can be contrasting, but you need to think about what it could be combined with. The rooms look interesting where the legs of the pouf and, for example, the frame of the mirror are painted in the same shade. A solid ottoman in the color of the door, walls or floor also looks stylish.
If the style of the apartment allows, a place of bright accent can be allocated to the puff. In this case, it may not be combined with other pieces of furniture. This solution fits into modern design projects.
With lid and shoe rack
One of the most comfortable models is a pouf with a lid and a shoe holder. The upper part can be made soft or left without a seat, you can sit on it or put a bag on it.
There is enough space under the cover for a minimal set of shoes. You don't have to buy a separate stand, leaving space for a wardrobe or chest of drawers.
Other models
The simplest and most popular form of a pouf is a box. This model is easy to manufacture, there is storage space inside, and it does not take up much space. There are corner ottomans, they help save space in the hallway, since the corners are usually left unused.
A pouf-pedestal is another option for optimal use of the area. In this model, the seat is attached to a storage system with drawers or hinged doors. Round and cylindrical poufs also have a hinged lid so that you can fold some things inside.
If desired, the pouf can be upholstered with soft material or left without decorative cover. Making such a choice, you need to build on the interior of the hallway.
Calculation of the size of the ottoman
First, you need to decide on the location of the ottoman. Using a tape measure, we measure the free space and determine what size the pouf should be. Next, we estimate the length and width of individual parts.
In the classic version, the ottoman should not be large. Standard dimensions are 350mm by 300mm, where the first number means the height, and the second is the diameter of the circle or the side of the square. If a child will use the pouf, then the seat can be left the same size, or it can be reduced to 220-250mm.
It is imperative to reduce the height so that the baby is comfortable to sit. The optimal numbers are 180-250mm. As a result, the height of the pouf should be about 1/5 of the height of a person, and of a child's - 1/4 - 1 / 3.5.
Drawings and diagrams
If the ottoman is complex, with additional compartments and stands, then to create it, it is better to draw a drawing in advance. It will help you not to get confused in the process of work and not to make mistakes when assembling parts.
To understand how to make a simple ottoman in the hallway with your own hands is quite simple and without additional schemes. You need to start from the basic shape - a cube or a rectangle.
Making a ottoman
Having finished with the preparatory stage, you can proceed directly to the manufacture of the pouf. First you need to prepare the tools:
- tape measure or ruler;
- screwdriver or screwdriver;
- marker;
- jigsaw, drill.
Preparation of materials
Depending on the selected pouf model, the list of required materials varies:
- main material to choose from;
- timber or metal corners;
- self-tapping screws;
- furniture wheels.
You can make a pouf from chipboard, MDF or plywood. It is important to decide on the desired model and budget. If there is a soft covering on top of the pouf, then you can take simpler materials.
If desired, the ottoman can be made even from improvised means:
- plastic bottles;
- paper rolls;
- wooden boxes;
- old tires;
- cable drums or wire spools.
Creation of a structure
To make a box for a pouf made of chipboard, MDF or plywood, you must:
- Cut six pieces to the desired size and shape, such as squares.
- If we use a bar for fastening, then we cut it into four parts so that the length of the segments corresponds to the width of the sides of the pouf.
- We connect the blanks to each other. We attach the side walls to the pieces of timber by screwing in three self-tapping screws on each side, then fix the bottom. Instead of a timber, metal corners can be used for fastening.
- If the pouf is made deaf, then the seat can also be fixed at this stage. Otherwise, we do it separately.
- Special furniture legs or wheels can be screwed to the bottom.
The seat of the pouf can be folding or removable. In the first case, hinge or piano hinges will be required. In the second, you need to add stops to prevent slipping.
A tire pouf is made even easier:
- We cut out two circles from plywood or other material, they should go 2-3 cm on the side of the tire.
- We fix the structure with a screwdriver and self-tapping screws.
- Then we apply hot melt glue on the surface of the future ottoman and wrap it with jute thread. This should be done in sections of 10-20 cm, you can proceed to the next one only after the glue has dried on the previous one.
- When the pouf is completely dry, cover it with acrylic varnish on top. This point must be followed, regardless of whether the upholstery will be made. The varnish will help to fix the thread and increase the strength of the product.
A pouf made of plastic bottles is made using a similar technology:
- We fasten containers suitable in height with adhesive tape, achieving the required diameter. On average, 14 bottles are required.
- If the ottoman should be high, then we use two tiers. To do this, we make holes in the bottoms of the upper tier, into which the covers of the lower tier fit tightly.
- We turn the workpiece over so that the bottle caps serve as legs.
- From above we attach a synthetic winterizer with a thickness of 300 mm, so that the bottoms of the bottles are not felt.
- We turn the workpiece over with packaging cardboard.
- We sew a decorative cover separately.
This option is not durable, so it makes no sense to use better materials.
If it is decided to make the pouf from cardboard pipes, then you need to do the same. It is better to cut the top and bottom of the structure from a more reliable and dense material, since this pouf is stronger and more durable than the previous one.
You can wrap the workpiece with fiberboard, if there is already a coating on it, then you can do without a cover. Ottomans made of coils only require customization and the addition of a soft seat.
Sheathing
To sheathe an ottoman with fabric, you must:
- foam rubber;
- cladding material;
- construction stapler;
- sewing machine;
- nylon or nylon threads.
For an ottoman, you can sew a regular cover, for this you need to measure it, make a pattern. Sew parts with a typewriter. When the ottoman is covered with padding polyester, put on the finished cover on top and fasten it.
If you decide to make a fabric padded stool, then:
- Cut out a long strip of foam rubber so that it covers the four sides of the pouf.
- We glue it with glue and additionally fix it with a furniture stapler.
- For sitting, it is advisable to take thicker foam rubber so that you can sit comfortably. Cut out the part of the desired shape.
- We fix it with brackets on the back of the seat or glue it.
- Cut a strip of the same length from the upholstery fabric as for the foam rubber.
- We sew it so that we get a ring.
- We stretch the resulting detail over the ottoman.
- We wrap the allowances and fix them with a stapler.
- For sitting, we sew a cover or cover it with an elastic fabric, fasten everything with staples.
A pouf is a comfortable interior detail that can be not only beautiful, but also functional. You can make this piece of furniture with your own hands. In this case, you can create your own unique design that suits your interior.
The pouf can be made from classic materials or you can use available tools if desired. If you do the job well, even an inexpensive plastic bottle option will be able to perform its function flawlessly.
When choosing a cover or upholstery of an ottoman, be guided by the interior of the hallway. It should fit into the overall picture and overlap with other decor items.
