Description of the loft bed with a sofa below
Regardless of the number of beds on the upper tier, loft beds with a sofa below are the closest to bunk beds. At least two people can sleep on them at the same time, one on the second "floor", the other on the first.
Loft bed design
Structurally, they differ from other loft beds only in the first tier. The sofa can be folded into the wall, retractable, stationary, transformable. Depends on the model.
It can act as a separate element or form a single whole with the loft bed. Otherwise, the design is typical: the upper tier with a sleeping place on a rigid frame, protective sides and a ladder.
Advantages and disadvantages
Main pluses:
- A profitable acquisition both in terms of saving scarce space in a small room, and in terms of functionality (it will cost on average less than a bed and a sofa separately).
- A couple of square meters can comfortably rest 2-4 people.
There is an advantage over a bunk bed, which serves only as a place to sleep. You can relax comfortably on the sofa during the day. Read a book, work on your laptop, or watch TV.
Disadvantages:
- Having a sofa usually means less functionality than “traditional” loft beds with work, sports, play areas. Most models don't even have a wardrobe or bed linen.
- Not suitable for babies 3-6 years old. The second tier is quite high, as you need a sofa to fit below.
The lack of functionality in some loft beds is partially offset by the presence of niches in the steps of the stairs or in the sofa.
Features and types of stairs
There are no special “bed and sofa” stairs. All structures leading to the second "floor" are suitable for models with any functional content of the lower tier.
The ladder can be:
- Plank lateral.
- Frontal (at the headboard, footboard or in the middle).
- Modular, in the form of step boxes.
- Removable, add-on.
Manufacturing materials
There are children's models or loft beds for a child and a parent, made of metal. However, much more often furniture for adults is made from aluminum tubes or stainless steel.
The most common loft bed materials with sofa downstairs are:
- Chipboard and other types of chipboard.
- Wood massif.
- Natural wood + fiberboard (for example, many products from the catalog of the Ikea manufacturer's online store).
- Plywood, MDF.
Cheap substitutes for solid wood are usually covered with inexpensive eco-veneer. Less commonly - natural wood veneer. The quality is worse than models from solid wood, but the price of products from chipboard is on average 2-4 times lower.
Varieties of designs and popular models
The loft bed with a sofa is structurally different from its "brothers" with a different functional content of the lower tier only by the "first floor". There are models with an additional wooden or metal base for increased overall stability.
Sofas can be either an integral part of the frame structure, or a separate interior element. They can be retractable, folding. Type "book", "dolphin", with a reclining top and storage space for bed linen and clothes.
The most popular are models with a frame made of chipboard / laminated chipboard, sofas with foam or polyurethane filling and upholstery made of fleece, jacquard and other fairly durable fabrics. Less often people buy products made from more expensive natural materials due to their high cost. Wooden structures are often made to order.
Dimensions (edit)
An attic bed with a sofa downstairs for parents usually has the same dimensions for sleeping places as products designed for adults only. That is, the length is up to two meters, the width is on average about 70-80 centimeters for each berth.
The height of the upper tier is usually higher than that of loft beds with other functional content on the ground floor. If this were not so, the sofa would not fit below. Height - 1.6-2.0 m. Bumpers - 30-40 centimeters.
How to choose the right loft bed
The selection criteria are not much different from the principles by which classic loft beds are selected. It is enough to answer yourself a few questions.
Am I satisfied with these or those characteristics? Is the design reliable and safe enough? Are there any easily breakable elements, how difficult will it be to find a replacement for them in case of failure?
If you decide to buy a loft bed with a chipboard frame, keep in mind that it will last much less than a wooden or metal structure. However, it costs several times cheaper, so in a couple of years it can be inexpensively replaced with a new one.
A loft bed with a sofa on the lower tier is worth buying if you need to furnish a small room where it is difficult to place the sofa and bed separately. On a couple of square meters, we will get at least two sleeping places, one of which is easy to use as a recreation area even during the day.
On the couch you can sit with a book, watch TV, work on a laptop, chat with friends.
