A complete overview of the polyurethane orthopedic mattress
Polyurethane foam mattress (PPU) is the best choice for everyone who wants to ensure a calm and deep sleep, as well as save a little. In terms of convenience and basic characteristics, it is not inferior to expensive ones, while being much cheaper.
Important! Only a high-quality polyurethane foam mattress made in full compliance with the technology is not harmful to health. Cheap fakes, when heated to human body temperature, can release toxic substances into the air.
What is polyurethane foam
Polyurethane foam is called a foamy artificial polymer. It is almost 98% filled with air, the remaining 2% is hardened plastic. This structure gives the material such properties as low thermal conductivity, low density, weak hygroscopicity.
It bends well, easily rolls up, and after the cessation of external influence, it quickly takes on its original shape. At the same time, polyurethane foam is not difficult and not expensive to manufacture.
With strict adherence to the manufacturing technology, it is environmentally safe, it is used even in food refrigerators. If the recommended manufacturing process is violated, it can pose a serious hazard, in particular, release carcinogenic and other similar substances into the air.
What is a polyurethane mattress
A polyurethane foam mattress is called a mattress filled with polyurethane foam. Due to its exceptional properties, it ensures an even distribution of the load of a lying person and contributes to his comfortable rest.
Dimensions (edit)
Sizes of single mattresses: 80x190 cm, 80x200 cm, 90x190 cm, 90x200 cm.Rarer are 80x180 cm. The sizes of one-and-a-half beds are 140x200 cm, 120x200 cm. Double mattresses are 160x200 cm, 180x200 cm. It is easy to purchase mattresses of other widths and lengths to order.
The height of the side of the mattress starts from 5 cm. The standard is 15 cm and above.
Important! The mattress should be turned over from time to time. This will extend the life of the product, prevent deformation and restore elasticity.
Density and rigidity
The maximum load on one berth and the service life of the product depend on them.
The cheapest mattresses are also the softest. They are enough for no more than 3 years. The maximum load on the berth should not exceed 90 kg.
Mattresses with medium firmness belong to the middle price category. They will have to buy a replacement in 5-7 years after the start of use. The maximum permissible load is not more than 110 kg.
Polyurethane foam mattresses with maximum firmness are the most expensive, but they last for 10 or even more years. Permissible load approx. 140 kg.
Varieties of mattresses
Basically, they differ in stiffness and size, as mentioned above. In addition, on sale you can find polyurethane foam mattresses with memory effect or layers of coir, felt, jacquard. Also, polyurethane foam mattresses can be with a relief and smooth surface. Embossed gives the products additional orthopedic properties.
Polyurethane mattresses differ in shape. In the overwhelming majority of cases, they are rectangular, but you can order both round and not at all standard for a bed of an unusual shape.
Advantages and disadvantages
Polyurethane foam mattresses have a number of advantages, we will mention them:
- Affordable price. Even people with modest incomes can afford to buy PPU mattresses.
- Pronounced orthopedic properties. Complete lack of hammock effect. The material adjusts to the body of the sleeper.
- Increased breathability. There are almost no obstructions in the open cells of the air material. Its circulation prevents mold and condensation from appearing.
- Elasticity and elasticity. The mattress, even being very tightly packed, is able to completely restore its shape in a matter of minutes.
- Ease of transportation. For its size, the polyurethane foam mattress weighs very little. It is not difficult to drag the product or, by rolling a roll, take it to the dacha.
There were also some drawbacks. These include:
- The prevalence of counterfeits. It is easy to buy a surrogate that is harmful to health, emitting toxic fumes, instead of a quality one.
- The need for professional care. It will not work well to clean a heavily soiled polyurethane foam mattress on your own. You will have to apply for a service in a company engaged in this kind of activity.
- Flammability. The material is highly flammable. In the event of a fire, it poses an increased threat.
Important! Remember to periodically vacuum the mattress and wash its cover. It is better to have several of the latter. Besides variety, it is more hygienic.
How to choose the right one
The following criteria should be considered:
- Rigidity. The higher it is, the less harm to health will be. Many people prefer to buy a soft one, but with this choice, you can ruin the spine. This is especially true for children.
- The size. Standard mattresses fit standard beds. In any case, it is not worth buying a mattress by less than 1-2 cm in width and length of your bed. It will be uncomfortable and can be harmful.
- Elasticity. Press down on the surface. The faster it regains its shape, the better.
- Case. If necessary, it can be easily replaced, but it is more correct to immediately take it with a fabric that is suitable in color, wear resistance and other criteria. Most often, covers are made of cotton, jacquard, calico and polycotton.
- Beauty and appearance. Consider them whenever possible, while never sacrificing convenience and practicality.
- Price. The principle does not always work - the more expensive, the better, but inadequately cheap products should definitely be avoided.
Of course, there are better mattresses than polyurethane foam, but for a few thousand rubles you are unlikely to find one. From an affordable price category, such products are the best option. However, whether to buy or not is up to you.
