Why mattress size matters
A sleeping place should correspond not only to the personal wishes and complexions of the people who will lie on it, but also to the size of the bed. If these three criteria are not met, then you can forget about comfort and healthy sleep, and even the most ideal orthopedic mattress will gradually deform, stop performing its functions and will need to be replaced.
Problems you can face if you don't choose the right mattress:
- Feeling unwell in the morning: pain in the head and lower back, psychological discomfort, negative perception of the world.
- Unhealthy intermittent sleep, chronic fatigue, sometimes leading to stress.
- Curvature of the spinal column, posture problems.
- Deterioration of the performance parameters of the mattress.
- Additional costs for replacing a bed due to its rapid failure.
Standard mattress size for baby beds
There is no single bed option for a child. Each manufacturer produces products to their own standards. The most popular product size for a crib is 120x60. However, there are other standard sizes of mattresses for a children's bed: 140 by 60 and 70, 160 by 80 and so on. The height of models for preschoolers and younger students usually does not exceed 30-120 mm (in adults, it can reach 20-40 centimeters or more).
The lower thickness is due to the fact that rigid and springless models are usually produced (and recommended) for children. It is they who are more useful for children who have not yet formed their posture.
Mattress for teenage beds
The sizes of mattresses on children's beds for teenagers are closer to those of adults. Typical lengths are 190 and 200 centimeters. The most common single size is 190 by 80. 190 by 70 and 190 by 90 are less common. Not every manufacturer offers one-and-a-half 120-centimeter models.
Sizes of mattresses for adults, taking into account the dimensions of the bed
The most popular adult models have dimensions of 160-180 by 200. But these dimensions refer to single beds. The standard size of mattresses for double beds will be different.Consider the most common product dimensions:
- Single and double.
- "One and a half".
- King size (Queen size, Superking size).
- Euro.
One bedroom
Typical widths are 80 and 90. Lengths are 190-200 with an interval of 5. However, there are others.
Double
Suspension: 160x200 and 180x200 centimeters. The length, as in products with a different number of berths, is more often 190, 195 or 200 centimeters. Width is not less than 140, optimal is 160.
One and a half
Typical lengths for one-and-a-half products are the same as for two- and one-bedroom. The width is usually 120 cm.The most common are 200 and 190 by 120.
King size
Beds of King Size and Queen Size standards came to us from America. This is the choice of those people who do not have enough space in typical sleeping places and need to be able to “fall apart like a king”. There are two "royal" standards, American and English.
Dimensions:
- King size (USA): 180 x 200.
- Queen size (USA): 160 x 200.
- King Size (UK): 150 x 200.
- Superking Size (UK): 180 x 200.
Apparently, only the queen should have Queen Size in England. At least British manufacturers do not offer such dimensions.
Note! The sizes of products of American manufacturers are usually indicated in inches. In order to convert them into more familiar centimeters for us, the number of inches must be multiplied by 2.54.
Euro bed
Despite the fact that King Size and Queen Size are common in the EU, the standards of continental Europe are somewhat different both from the UK and the United States, and from our market. The difference even shows up in units of measurement.
While our manufacturers and sellers are accustomed to specifying dimensions in centimeters, Europeans count in millimeters. Also, they do not have the concept of "one and a half berth". The Euro bed can be either single or double. And our "lorry" will be a narrow double for a European.
And the last difference, the third. If our mattress lengths change in steps of five centimeters, then for Europeans the minimum step is ten centimeters. Or, as they are considered to be, 100 millimeters.
Most common sizes in the Eurozone:
- Single: 1600/1800/2000 by 800, 1900/2000 × 900, 1200 × 2000 mm.
- Double (corresponding to our "lorries"): 1400/1600 × 2000 mm.
- Double (regular): 1800/1900 / 2000x2000 mm.
Custom and round mattress shapes
Many manufacturers offer custom-made mattresses. In this case, the buyer has complete freedom of choice (within reasonable limits). Both in terms of size and other parameters: spring mechanisms, external upholstery, choice of filler, stiffness, orthopedic features, and so on.
Every day restless designers are more and more sophisticated and offer the consumer more and more original, unique (and therefore non-standard) beds.Bedding usually comes in a set, but there is only one set! Over time, the mattress decays and needs to be replaced ... and there is nothing to replace it with. Nothing is on sale in suitable sizes. There is only one way out - to order the manufacture of a mattress of the desired shape and dimensions.
Many manufacturers also offer rounding of the corners of typical models. A custom-made product is usually at least 10-15% more expensive than its in-store serial counterparts. Companies making round mattresses can be counted on one hand. Typical diameters of round models: 200-240 centimeters in 10 cm intervals.
How to choose the right mattress
Now let's figure out how to choose the right sleeping place in size.
Choice of mattress by length
Suitable bedding parameters are indicated in the documentation for the bed. If the papers have not survived and it is not possible to adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations, you will need to take a tape measure and estimate the dimensions along the inner surface. You need to measure not the old mattress (it could deform over time), but directly the sleeping place on the inner surface of the bed.
With a height of 1.75 m and above, 200 cm is optimal.If lower - 195 or 190.
By width
The width of one berth is usually in the range of 60-80 centimeters. This is enough for the average person. If you often sleep restlessly and roll over in a dream, it makes sense to focus on one and a half and double dimensions. The width and other sizes of double models should be chosen depending on the parameters and preferences of both partners. Typical width is 140-200 cm.
Height
Height is primarily determined by design features, and its choice is largely determined by the personal preferences of the buyer. In orthopedic springless models, it is most often 16 cm. Mattresses 2-10 cm are usually recommended only as toppers, but not as the main berth. The height of models with independent springs (damping elements are separated and do not affect each other) - 20-22 cm.
Medical advice
From a medical point of view, the most healthy mattresses are orthopedic. They are tougher than usual, but they are more comfortable to sleep on. And since this product is primarily medical, then, first of all, it must have a certificate of conformity. Secondly, when choosing an orthopedic mattress, it is better to focus on the advice of orthopedists.
Orthopedic mattresses
Podiatrists can give the following tips:
- When purchasing, check for certificates.
- It doesn't hurt to discuss your selection criteria with your doctor, especially if you have or have ever had spinal problems.
- The most comfortable and suitable for almost all semi-rigid models. For aged people, products with low rigidity are more optimal. Hard ones are recommended for children and adults with scoliosis and other problems with posture and spine (in this case, consultation with a doctor is required!).
- Memory foam mattresses are good, but they are only suitable for those who sleep more or less well. If you often toss and turn in your sleep, products with Memory Foam are not for you.
It is also worth considering that rigid and semi-rigid models are more suitable for a growing body. For middle-aged people, if there are no health problems and related medical indications - any, according to their own preferences. After fifty years, it is better to opt for soft anatomical products.
