Bed assembly diagram with drawers
A large, comfortable bed certainly has its benefits in terms of restorative rest, thanks to the conditions for adequate sleep. However, at the same time, it “eats up” additional space, which is especially important for rooms with a small area.
To minimize these losses, it was thought up to combine a sleeping place with the ability to store things. In order to make this space more convenient to use, boxes began to be used. Thus, the user does not need to rummage under the bed in search of the necessary thing, it is enough just to open the drawer and take what is needed. The things themselves do not wrinkle with this method of storage, in addition, they can be laid out in the right order, depending on their purpose.
Thus, a comfortable place to sleep is functionally combined with a useful space that is easily accessible.

Bed design and construction with drawers
It is possible to implement this concept in practice in different ways, you can make one large pull-out tray, you can make several, there are also options when the boxes are arranged in two rows in height. First of all, the choice depends on what things you plan to store here.
If we are talking about bedding or other large items, then you need large boxes. If we are talking about the personal property of the spouses, then in this case it is better to make the cells small on both sides of the bed.
It is also necessary to foresee the location of the bed in advance, because the extension of the cells requires free space. For example, if the bed on one side is close to the wall, then there is no point in sliding mechanisms on this side.
Depending on the mechanisms used, the drawers can be divided into dependent and independent. In the first case, we are talking about drawers that slide out with guides, which can be equipped with closers for ease of use. In this case, the boxes are part of the structure.
It is important to know that the guides have restrictions on the weight load, as well as on the width of the boxes, if you do not follow the restrictions set by the manufacturer, then the guides will fail very quickly. The independent type is roll-out boxes, which are separate boxes on wheels, they are not connected in any way with the bed and they can be moved around the perimeter of the entire room.
If you haven't found a bed with drawers that would be perfect for you, then don't worry, as beds with drawers can be made by yourself, based on personal needs. In order to make a bed with drawers with your own hands, the main thing is to draw up competent drawings.
Required materials for manufacturing
For the manufacture of the bed frame itself, you can use a wide variety of materials:
- Chipboard. This material is available at its cost, easy to process. Does not require additional decor or finishing, a wide range of colors.
- MDF. Eco-friendly material, does not require processing, has a high cost.
- Plywood. Eco-friendly inexpensive material with all the properties of natural wood. Requires special processing and coating.
- Bar and boards. Working with this material requires special skills, as well as additional tools, the surface requires processing and varnishing.
- Metal carcass. The body for the bed can also be welded from metal and sheathed with chipboard.
Note! In the manufacture of chipboard, chips and formaldehydes are used, the high content of which is toxic. Therefore, ask the seller for a quality certificate. It is worth buying only if it is indicated that this material can be used in hospitals and kindergartens.
Usually the boxes are made of the same material as the body, however, combination is also possible. As mechanisms, you need to purchase either wheels for roll-out boxes, or guides.
Important! Retractable guides are of two types - roller and ball. For boxes, ball-type guides are a better option, they are more reliable in operation and withstand higher weight loads.
Manufacturing process
After you have decided on the design of bedroom furniture, material and dimensions, you can proceed directly to the manufacturing process itself.
First of all, you will need a detailing of the bed with drawers. However, before proceeding with it, you need to know exactly the size of the mattress. The sleeping place for it should be a little more, it is customary to add 5 centimeters in each direction. Thus, by adding this number to the size of the mattress, you will get the inner size of the bed.
Its overall size will be larger due to the thickness of the case, this should be taken into account if you calculate the layout in the room up to centimeters so that there is no overlap. For example, you want the outlet to be located close to each other, but because of the extra centimeters it will have to be moved.
After the drawings of your beds, along with the dimensions and drawers, are ready, the process of preparing the parts follows. They need to be cut to size and, if required, processed. If you are cutting at home, you will need a saw with a ruler.
Once all the details of the bed are ready, they will need to be drilled, for this you will need a drill and drills. It is better to drill such products as chipboard and MDF with a drill, and not with a screwdriver.Since the drill has more revolutions, so the holes made with it are more accurate.
The build process follows. For fastening, use Euro screws, furniture ties or bolts with nuts. Do not under any circumstances fix the bed with self-tapping screws.
Assembly and installation of boxes
When using roll-out units, be sure to take into account the size of the wheels so that they can freely enter and exit the opening intended for them. When calculating their width, do not forget about the gaps, they should not rub against the walls of the case.
Their depth should not exceed the size of the available free space. So, if you make very deep drawers, and you can only pull them out halfway, then things will roll into the far corner and it will be problematic to get them. When assembling the boxes themselves, the bottom should be overlaid, so it will be more durable.
Drawers are best made of chipboard, since the material is inexpensive and has a laminated coating. In addition, its uniform thickness avoids distortion and friction. The bottom of the box is most often made of fiberboard to relieve the load on the rails. When calculating them, do not forget that the guides also have their own thickness (13 mm each), therefore, when calculating the width of the box, subtract 26 mm from the size of the opening.
If the size of the box is several millimeters larger than the required one, then their extension will not be smooth, and soon the guides will fail. If you make them a few millimeters smaller, then the boxes will constantly fly off the runners. The depth of the drawers must match the size of the rails. Please note that the fastening of the rails to the sides of the bed must be done before assembly. Attaching them to the assembled body is inconvenient, and moreover, it is more difficult to achieve accuracy.
Do-it-yourself children's bed with drawers
The process of making a baby bed, as well as the assembly scheme for a baby bed with drawers, is not much different, you just need to take into account some features:
- The surface must be smooth and free from any roughness.
- The absence of sharp corners in the design. It is best to make the corners radius.
- The length of the bed must be made taking into account the fact that the child is growing.
- For young children, it is worthwhile to provide elements of the fence so that it does not fall in a dream.
The nuances of self-assembly of the bed
The main thing when assembling a bed with your own hands is the need to take into account all the nuances at the design stage. Since any miscalculations will lead to spoiled material. Be sure to check your drawing of the bed with drawers with dimensions before proceeding with sawing. This can be done with a sheet and a pen.
Draw the assembly process on paper, be sure to indicate the dimensions of the parts and their thickness. Add all the sizes, check the resulting number with the size of your bed, you should get the same numbers. Any discrepancy is evidence that there is a mistake somewhere.
If you plan to use an orthopedic base, then you need to make supports for it, on which it will lie, these can be bars or iron corners.
How storage boxes can be used
At their core, under-bed drawers have the same storage conditions as a regular wardrobe. In them, things can be arranged in the desired sequence, they do not get dust, etc. The only difference is that things cannot be stored upright.
If we are talking about a children's room, then the boxes are, first of all, a convenient place for storing toys. In this case, it is better if there are two boxes. One big child will be difficult to open, but two compartments can be divided into things and toys.
If we are talking about a bed for an adult, then in this case you can store clean bed linen in the drawers, as well as personal belongings.
