DIY furniture from scrap materials
The furniture market in our time is saturated with a huge number of all kinds of models, but a closer look shows that almost all of the offered furniture is quite typical. It can be quite difficult to find something unusual and really interesting.
There are two options for solving this problem - contact a furniture manufacturer with an individual order, or show imagination and try to do something with your own hands.
DIY furniture
Furniture made with your own hands from improvised material, of course, will require time and effort from you, but it will save you money.
However, then it will delight you for a long time with its unique and inimitable look, because even one or two pieces of such furniture can uniquely change the entire interior of your home.
Ideas for new furniture from old items
Look around you - there are so many different objects around you. And if you look at them outside the box and use your imagination?
From the remnants of plastic pipes, you can make a frame, which is then covered with a thick cloth - and now a new cabinet is ready. Make a metal lattice frame and attach old unnecessary computer disks to it - you have a room partition or screen.
But from the case of Soviet speakers, which have not been working for a long time, you get good bookshelves.
Saw the table top and legs from the old Soviet table lying on the balcony in half, cover them with furniture film, connect with screws - did you really get a new coffee table?
But from the boxes of vegetables you can get an interesting and original rack. Several car tires can quickly turn into a soft pouf or the basis of a future table, by the way, an old glass from a window may well be a table top.
Plastic bottles, a computer case, cardboard, an iron barrel, doors from a kitchen set ... You just have to fantasize and know how to use various tools a little.
Required tools and materials
As already described above, anything can become the material for your furniture - it all depends on your imagination. You will definitely need different fasteners to create furniture.
The type of tool depends on the material you choose, but almost always you cannot do without a screwdriver or a set of screwdrivers, a hacksaw or an electric jigsaw, a hammer.
The nuances of creating furniture
If you want to make furniture with your own hands from improvised means, then first of all you need to clean the surfaces from dirt, grind them to eliminate irregularities, treat them with special compounds that prevent rotting or the appearance of rust.
Before starting work, make a drawing of the item to be manufactured, and apply the appropriate markings on the details.
To increase the strength of furniture at the joints of parts, in addition to the main fasteners, you can use the appropriate glue.
Important! Do-it-yourself furniture from scrap materials at home is not suitable for every interior.
In a lush and elegant bedroom in the Baroque style, a bed made of wooden pallets will look completely inappropriate.
Below we will consider step by step the process of creating some furniture with your own hands.
Table
The table has a fairly simple design, so even a beginner will be able to make the process of its manufacture:
- draw a drawing of the table with specific dimensions (or find it on forums on the Internet);
- prepare the material by treating the surfaces with a plane and a grinder;
- saturate with protective compounds;
- mark the material in accordance with the drawing;
- cut out the tabletop, legs and other details from the material;
- assemble the table using the hardware.
Cupboard
Consider how to make a wardrobe with your own hands from scrap materials:
- prepare chipboard plates with a thickness of 18 mm;
- decide on the method of opening the doors (swing or compartment);
- draw a cabinet project and cut out the necessary details in accordance with it;
- assemble the frame from the side walls, bottom and top base;
- attach the back wall;
- install the shelves, assemble the drawers, and install them in the cabinet using special guides;
- hang the doors;
- screw the fittings.
Bed
The bed is a more complex structure compared to the table and wardrobe, but if you follow the instructions, you can also assemble it yourself. For this:
- prepare a drawing of the bed;
- assemble the frame from strong pre-sanded bars and paint it;
- make slats (cross slats) for the bed;
- fasten the bars on the inner side of the frame sidewalls;
- on the fixed bars, place the lamellas at the same distance, not exceeding 6 cm;
- attach the bed supports to the frame;
- sand the structure and varnish.
Bedside table
Follow these steps to make your bedside table:
- prepare a drawing;
- cut out the necessary details;
- drill the necessary holes in the sidewalls to install the guide boxes;
- assemble the frame of the curbstone;
- mount the rear wall;
- install drawer guides;
- insert the assembled boxes.
In exactly the same way, but using larger sizes, you can make a chest of drawers with your own hands from improvised means.
Pros and cons of DIY furniture
Some people, looking at such homemade products, will say that this is ridiculous and that these things really belong in the urn, but most people will like such original things.
Handcrafted furniture has its advantages:
- special energy of such things associated with the person who made them;
- a unique and interesting gift for another person;
- you know exactly what it is made of and whether it is safe from a health point of view;
- such items are always liked by children;
- will bring novelty and uniqueness to the home.
In the end, the amount of garbage and unnecessary things at home has decreased. And also, if this process seemed exciting and exciting to you, then from a hobby it may well develop into a real business.
Restoration of old furniture
Restoring old furniture can give new life to your favorite object.
The advantages of this work are the following:
- saving money. In most cases, restoration is cheaper than purchasing new furniture;
- improved design. The furniture industry, like other areas in our life, is constantly evolving, so your old furniture can get a modern look;
- quality materials. As a rule, old furniture frames are made of higher quality materials than modern ones. Therefore, a new upholstery or facade will give a chance to use a better quality item for a long time;
- this chair and that chest of drawers are dear to you as a memory or a family heirloom. In this case, there is simply no other alternative besides restoration.
Not always old unnecessary things should go straight to the landfill, because they can be given a second life. But you don't have to fix everything in a row and try to make new things out of all the trash. You should not, for example, make a kitchen set from scrap materials. The "golden" mean is important here.
