DIY frameless furniture
By furniture, most understand cabinet products or soft interior items, which necessarily have a frame made of durable material. But modern comfortable armchairs and even sofas can be made without a wooden or metal base. They consist of outer and inner covers, under which the filler is hidden. It keeps its shape well, so that the product does not deform.
We will tell you how frameless furniture is made with your own hands, what materials and tools you will need.
Required materials and tools
Since such furniture does not have wooden and metal parts, carpentry tools and sophisticated professional equipment will not be needed. The only technique that comes in handy is a good sewing machine that is suitable for sewing heavy fabrics. It should be sized for # 100 needles.
What else comes in handy:
- dense breathable fabric for the inner cover;
- furniture mother for the outer cover (you can choose any upholstery fabric);
- strong threads;
- tractor or spiral zipper;
- sharp tailor's scissors;
- chalk for transferring patterns;
- filler - it can be foam rubber, unnecessary rags and synthetic winterizer, but it is better to take ball polystyrene foam.
You will also need paper for drawing up patterns, a pencil, tape, a ruler, safety pins and a sewing meter.
The process of making frameless furniture
First you need to choose a pattern and calculate the amount of material. Further making simple frameless furniture with your own hands consists of several steps.
Formation of the base
Strong matter is required to create the base. An inner cover of a given shape is created from it. How to do it:
- draw up a drawing according to the calculations;
- transfer the pattern to the fabric - secure the pattern with safety pins, circle with chalk, add allowances;
- carefully cut out the details, stitch together by inserting zippers;
- sew the inner cover with strong threads.
After that, the base can be filled with expanded polystyrene.
Choice of design
The main difference between furniture will be its shape and design. Frameless modules can be used to assemble a full bed or a small sofa.
The rest of the pieces of furniture are mobile chairs and volumetric loungers of various types.
Form options:
- bean bag chair - sewn on patterns of a round or oval shape;
- pear chair - oval, pear-shaped with a pointed edge towards the upper edge;
- pillow - a simple pattern of two rectangular elements;
- pouf - cylindrical or square, will require dense stuffing;
- ball - sewn on the principle of a soccer ball from parts of different shades, can be of any size;
- pyramid - sewn from a square detail of the bottom and 4 triangles;
- rectangular modules - a sofa or bed is assembled from them, the outer cover is responsible for the shape of the finished furniture.
Pattern
The easiest way is to print or transfer to paper the finished patterns with the calculation of the matter. But they can be compiled by hand. This requires:
- determine the size;
- draw a model of furniture, think over the number of details;
- on tracing paper with cells of 2.5 or 5 cm, an image of the details is applied in real size;
- the pattern is transferred taking into account the seam allowance (up to 2 cm) and the direction of the warp thread.
Some details, for example, the bottom, are best done in duplicate for the strength of the product.
Important! The patterns for the base and the outer cover will be the same, but in the second case, you need to slightly increase the details along the contour (by 2-5 cm on each side).
We sew
Sewing a beanbag chair or modules for a frameless sofa is easy. You just need to follow the sequence of actions:
- the parts are folded with the front side inward and stitched together on one side, leave an allowance of 10 mm, one side is left unstitched;
- then do the stitching of the wedges from the front side;
- a zipper is sewn into the left bend.
After that, the cover can be turned out and stuffed.
Advice. Sew Velcro to the front side at the seams or in some areas. And do the same on identical sections of the seamy side of the outer cover. This is necessary so that the inner bag does not wrinkle, and the outer fabric does not slide out.
How correctly and what can be filled
It is best to purchase polystyrene foam in small granules. This material will be evenly distributed in the case, will not clump and get lost. For a small chair, 3 kg will be enough. With this filler, you can adjust the density of the furniture, if desired. Stuff through a zipper cut, you need to fill ⅔ of the furniture volume.
Down and feathers are also fine for stuffing, but they are short-lived and can cause allergies. Foam rubber in granules is also suitable for stuffing, but it does not take its original shape so quickly and wears out faster.
Furniture decoration
Any furniture fabrics are suitable for making an outer cover:
- velor - inexpensive, pleasant to the touch, prone to wear;
- flock - wear-resistant, easy to clean, does not fade;
- chenille - beautiful and easy to care for;
- jacquard - strong, easy to use, durable.
For children's furniture, it is worth using hypoallergenic natural or mixed fabrics. Also pay attention to the most wear-resistant materials.
Advice. The part for the bottom can be made of artificial leather or other abrasion-resistant material.
You can decorate frameless furniture with appliques, embroidery, painting on fabric. Pockets with Velcro or zippers will be a convenient and practical decor.
