Correct mounting of the mirror to the tree
Mirrors in the interior are a sure-fire way to update a room, make it visually wider, lighter and more spacious. By placing a reflective surface on a wall or cabinet door, you can create a more harmonious and functional environment. It is not difficult to glue a mirror on a chipboard, having carefully studied the instructions.
What you need to attach a mirror to a tree
First of all, you need to accurately determine the size of the product. Its edges should not rest against furniture: this will lead to surface cracking. When making measurements, leave a margin of about 4 mm around the entire perimeter.
Cutting a mirror at home is a laborious, painstaking task that a beginner is unlikely to be able to do correctly. It is better to entrust the work to a professional.
Important! Be sure to check the quality of the processing of the edges of the reflective canvas after cutting. They must be rounded, sanded. Otherwise, it will be dangerous to work with the material, and the aesthetics of the result will be impaired.
The surface to which the product will be attached must be flat, clean, dry and covered with a primer. The adhesion to the glue will be better, and moisture will not enter the tree and cause fungus to grow in it. Any unevenness can cause perceptible distortion.
Required tools
Depending on what you plan to glue the mirror to the tree, you may need:
- Sandpaper (not too coarse - coarse will leave deep marks, just sand the surfaces lightly for better adhesion).
- For mechanical fastening, it is convenient to use an assembly gun - a device for quick and reliable use of fasteners.
- To use special mounts, you need to stock up on a drill, screwdriver, diamond drill, screwdrivers.
- Pencil to outline the location of the item on the furniture.
- Ruler or tape measure.
If adhesives are used for fastening, before starting work, you need to degrease both surfaces: both the chipboard and the back of the mirror. A common solvent is suitable for this.
Mirror mounting options for laminated chipboard
There are several basic ways to securely mount a mirror on laminated chipboard. When choosing, based on the size of the product: adhesives can easily cope with small ones. For massive reflective surfaces, it is safer to use mounts.
Mechanical fastening method
The most popular way to place a mirror on wood or plywood furniture is with special "legs". The sequence of actions is as follows:
- Remove the door from the cabinet and place it horizontally.
- Use a pencil to mark the locations for the mounting holes.
- Screw on the legs and bend them.
- Place the canvas with a soft layer.
- Clamp the feet securely.
Another option for mechanical fastening is special screws. For them, holes are made in the reflective canvas with a diamond drill.
Note! During the drilling process, you need to constantly wet the surface of the mirror with water, otherwise it will crack. The canvas should lie on thick cardboard or fabric so that it is not damaged during operation.
Plastic washers must be installed under the screw heads. Mechanical fastening is the most reliable method for large, heavy blades.
Mounting double-sided tape
A tape with two adhesive sides will help you quickly and easily attach a small element to wooden furniture:
- Draw pencil marks on the wood to help align the mirror.
- After degreasing your work surfaces, apply double-sided tape to the back of the reflective product around the entire perimeter.
- Make several vertical strips of tape at regular intervals.
- Peel off the protective tape from the other side of the duct tape and press the sheet firmly against the cabinet.
Do not use double-sided tape if you need to secure a large mirror: the tape may not support the weight of a massive object.
Special compounds and liquid nails
A fairly reliable and relatively easy way to fix a mirror on the surface of a tree is special adhesives or construction silicone.
Use only those formulations that are indicated for use on mirrors. Regular super resistant glue can react with amalgam and cause tarnishing, dark spots on it. Liquid nails should be neutral, not affect her in any way.
Additional Information: Amalgam is a mercury-metal alloy that forms a reflective surface. If you use glue with an unsuitable chemical composition, the amalgam can exfoliate, stain, that is, lose its functional properties.
Gluing instructions:
- Mark the location of the mirror.
- Gently sand the wooden surface with sandpaper.
- Prepare the back side of the canvas - clean it from dust, dry it, degrease it.
- Apply glue or silicone to it in the form of parallel lines evenly spaced over the area of the product.
- Since the glue does not freeze immediately, double-sided tape must be glued between its strips - it will hold the mirror until the composition hardens.
- When the glue starts to set, quickly and gently press the mirror against the wooden surface.
If the mirror is large enough, place something under the bottom of the mirror to hold the piece while the glue cures. It will take about a day to completely dry.
When working with the mirror, be careful and careful, wear gloves so as not to cut yourself. To attach a massive reflective canvas, it is better to call an assistant: it is quite difficult to cope with such a task alone.
