Dismantling the computer chair
Even the most reliable and high-quality furniture breaks down over time. And office chairs, alas, are no exception. Repairing such interior items is not cheap, so most people prefer to repair it with their own hands, using the recommendations of friends or the Internet.
How to disassemble the chair? What tools are required? Everything in order.
Design features
Before proceeding with the repair of an office chair (computer chair), it would be nice to familiarize yourself with the design. The thing is that it is only at first glance that they are all like twin brothers. In fact, there is a certain classification of such interior items.
Namely:
- Chair for the head. Equipped with a five-beam hollow cylindrical base, multiblock for adjusting back resistance, roll level and seat depth.
- Armchair for employees. It is distinguished by its low weight, the presence of adjusting the height of the seat, armrests and the depth of the backrest.
- Guest seat. A four-legged chair with a comfortable seat and back.
Before proceeding with the analysis of the structure, it is important to understand which elements can be disconnected and which cannot. Removable elements are armrests, rollers on the crosspiece and gas lift.
You can change the filling and upholstery of the seat and backrest, but this process is quite laborious, requires certain skills and must have special tools and devices. Therefore, if you are not a professional in this area, it is better not to try to change the upholstery yourself at home.
The frame of the chair can have both a monolithic structure and consist of separate parts connected by metal plates. In the latter case, you can also separate the plates from each other to eliminate the malfunction yourself.
Instruments
Even for superficial repairs or restoration, it may be necessary to disassemble the office chair.
This will require the following tools:
- Screwdriver;
- Hammer;
- Chisel;
- Pliers.
If the repair work concerns the gas lift, then it is worth adding technical lubricant and a bolt with a minimum diameter (about 10 mm, perhaps a little more) to the above points.
By the way, when manipulating the gas lift, it is better to use not a screwdriver, but a screwdriver. And after disassembling this unit, immediately put all the parts in a separate box, because the loss of one small nut will not allow you to use the entire mechanism in the future. We'll have to purchase it too.
Thanks to the use of technical lubricant, the parts will be easier to separate from each other. After all, if the chair served you faithfully for many years, did not break down, and was not disassembled, then the parts became denser, as if they had grown together.
Disconnecting one from the other will be extremely difficult.Therefore, do not forget to prepare a soft flannel cloth as well, so that after the completion of the repair work, wipe all the parts and remove greasy marks.
If the cross-piece of an office chair is made of plastic, then in the event of a breakdown it will simply have to be replaced, this part cannot be repaired. If the base is metal, then it is often necessary to replace the rollers. According to experts, the most reliable cross is the one that is made of aircraft-grade aluminum.
Such a structure is able to withstand serious loads without deforming or breaking. Unfortunately, the cost of chairs with a similar design is much higher. An important nuance, according to statistics, most often it is the gas lift that fails. Probably the reason is that it carries the maximum load.
New parts can be purchased at specialized office furniture stores. As a rule, there is a sufficient assortment of not only office chairs, but also consumables for them.
Step-by-step instruction
So, dismantling furniture is a phased disconnection of the main components. Then the breakdown is repaired, and the interior element is reassembled. Dismantling an office chair is a rather laborious process and not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Especially if you are new to this business.
To disassemble an office chair at home, you need to do the following:
- Place the furniture with the cross-piece facing up, unscrew the mount that connects the piastre and the seat. To do this, you need a Phillips screwdriver. After the bolts have been removed, the seat is removed.
- Unscrew the armrests from the metal plate to which they are attached.
- Hit with a hammer (just do it carefully so as not to damage the surfaces) or a piastre mallet in order to disconnect the gas lift. If the chair above has never been disassembled, and you have been using it for a long time, this can only be done with the use of serious physical force. Be careful not to bend the part during operation.
- Unscrew the bolts, thanks to which the connection of the permanent contact with the backrest and piastra is ensured.
- Gently but firmly tap the crosspiece with a mallet to move it away from the air chuck.
- Remove the rollers from the spider seat using a slotted screwdriver.
In order to remove the gas lift at home, it is recommended to use an annular drift. It is worth noting that the fasteners are quite fragile, and in order not to damage them, it is recommended to securely fix the crosspiece so that it remains stationary.
Although the office chair is a rather complex mechanism, it can be repaired. And some malfunctions are quite amenable to home "treatment". The minimum skills and the necessary tools will guarantee the success of your event.
Well, in order to resort to repairs as rarely as possible, buy armchairs from well-known companies that have earned a reputation in the consumer market. In addition, it is important to operate the chair exactly as recommended so that you can extend the life of your office furniture.
