How to decorate a house for Halloween with your own hands
The tradition of celebrating Halloween came to us from the West: it is there that one night a year everyone dresses up in sinister costumes and goes to visit, begging for sweets. It is generally accepted that this is how people appease the evil spirits walking down the street. On this holiday, I want to match the general atmosphere. So, let's find out how to decorate a house for Halloween with our own hands.
Halloween history
Halloween, or All Saints' Day, is celebrated on the night of October 31 to November 1. The history goes back to the ancient Celts, who worshiped and sacrificed to the God of the dead. Legend has it that on this night the gates of Hell open, and all essences go out to Earth. A little later, the ancient Romans combined this holiday with the Day of Remembrance of the Dead, and already in the 9th century on the territory of England for the first time "All Saints Day" sounded. In English it sounds like this: "All Hallows Even". Later the phrase was shortened to "Halloween" - already familiar to us.
Today, a previously creepy holiday has lost its primary essence. In the modern concept, this is just fun with dressing up, decorating your home and having fun parties. The main attribute is a pumpkin "head", which is supposedly capable of scaring away evil spirits with fire inside.
Halloween is actively celebrated in England, Australia, Ireland, America and other countries. Children and teenagers in scary masquerade costumes walk the streets exchanging "candy for life". In the United States, the holiday is considered the second after Christmas: bazaars, fairs, and masquerades are held there.
How to decorate a house for the holiday
Halloween home decor can be very different, the main thing is to get creative and get more fearful. Collect whatever you have at hand, stock up on glue, tape, gauze and candles - you will not only have to decorate your home, but also create an eerie atmosphere.
Door decor
Let's look at several options for how to effectively decorate your front door for Halloween. To make the house look like a real haunted castle, add a little devilish front door:
- lay a scary rug with witches or pumpkins;
- add a wreath with decor - cobwebs or bats;
- Put gauze on the old mannequin, hang it under the roof and add the ominous light of the lantern - the ghost is ready.
To make it look believable, spray fake blood everywhere, add small bones.
Advice! Make sure that the composition of the "blood" then easily rinses off the surface of the door.
Window decor
You can create the appearance of boarded up windows - cover them with black electrical tape or wide colored tape.It is better to decorate glasses that remain clean with different stencils in the form of witches, pumpkins, ghosts - in stores there is a huge assortment of such decor for the holiday. It is not difficult to make them with your own hands - draw and cut.
Room decor
Decorating and designing a home in the style of Halloween involves thousands of bright ideas. Your goal: to create the appearance of an abandoned, uninhabited space inside. Start with furniture: Cover sofas and tables with old white sheets, ideally with holes in them. Cover countertops and cabinets under dark fabrics that have torn edges. Place a "web" on the shelves: from torn gauze, cotton wool, pieces of bandage. Horror books in the "dust" will look appropriate.
Create an ominous atmosphere in the rooms with lighting - it should be dim, mysterious. The decor "bloody" candles looks ideal: melt red candles and drop them on white wax - stains look very believable, like blood. Plastic or cardboard bats suspended under the chandelier will create additional shadow.
Thick candles in the hand of an old mannequin look frightening (only a hand is needed). Draw crazy, furious eyes on the mirrors - they will definitely scare your guests. Spray paintings with white gauze on top with "blood" - this will help create the impression of a recent covert murder. Don't forget to cut and place a burning lantern pumpkin on the windowsill: the main Halloween decor.
Advice! If you have a treat in a given style, instead of plates, also use pumpkin, just peel it thoroughly from the inside.
Yard decor
The backyard lawn will look beautiful under the fallen leaves: you can simply stop cleaning a few days before Halloween. From a huge pile of foliage, let a boot mysteriously stick out - let it seem that there is a dead man. Tombstones will look very creepy - you can mold them from any junk or decorate with large stones of a suitable size. Add twisted stick crosses to this.
It is better to decorate the trees in the yard with gauze cobwebs, with shaggy spiders or a stuffed bird on the upper branch. A scarecrow looks beautiful, which is easy to create or buy. Don't forget about "blood" - there should be a lot of it. Skulls on the ground or in front of the door will add fear, and if you scatter small bones under your feet, someone will surely step on them and get scared. You need to add a skeleton to an arch or tree, and draw cracks on your car with a marker (which will wash off). It is appropriate to plant a bloody dummy inside the cabin.
DIY Halloween Crafts
Decorating a house for Halloween is more enjoyable with your own hands. You can do creative work with children - the process is interesting and exciting. We offer three master classes on making crafts for All Saints Day.
Large gauze ghost
The most popular and beloved Halloween character is a ghost. It is not difficult to make it, for this you will need:
- wire for the frame;
- gauze;
- tennis ball;
- a solution of starch and water;
- plastic bottle.
First of all, a frame is made and covered with a cloth.A starch solution is sprayed on top of the gauze, dried with a hairdryer and it remains to add eyes, draw a mouth.
Mini ghosts
You will need several balloons, plastic cups, glue, gauze and a container. We put one glass on another, bottom to bottom. We fix the structure with tape, put a balloon inside the upper glass. We fix the gauze soaked in glue on top, dry and pierce the ball. The final touch is the ghost's eyes and mouth.
Glass Jar Lanterns
You can decorate a courtyard, porch, room with such candlesticks. The design looks original and nice. The second name of the craft is "Jack's Lanterns". Such decor will look very appropriate on the curbs on the way to the house. Prepare:
- glass jars of different sizes;
- colored bright paper;
- glue;
- felt-tip pens;
- candles;
- paints.
You will need a small candlestick to set the candle inside. Paint containers with gouache or paste over with paper, draw scary patterns on the surface (stencils can be used). The main drawing is cut out of thick black paper: a witch on a broom, a pumpkin, a dead man, a ghost.
How to carve a pumpkin for Halloween
The main symbol of Halloween is the lantern pumpkin, without which the holiday will not work. You can see a lot of creative ideas on the Internet: the worse the face comes out, the better. To make it easier to carve, choose fresh pumpkins with relatively soft skin. The fruit should not be rotten, damaged - the decor for the holiday must look perfect.
Important! You can store the "ready-made" pumpkin no more than 5 days, it is better to cut it the day before the holiday.
Cut out the pattern step by step:
- with a spoon with pointed edges, pull out the seeds and pulp of the pumpkin, remove the excess from the walls, where the eyes and mouth will be;
- make the outline with needles or a marker.
It remains to exactly cut the decor with a blade along the lines.
Advice! The cuts can be lubricated with Vaseline to keep the design fresh.
You can add a pleasant smell: grate the pumpkin inside with nutmeg or cinnamon. It is recommended to cut a few holes in the lid for air intake so that the flesh does not "brown". The candle will burn longer if it is previously cooled in the freezer for a couple of hours. The flashlight looks original if you paint it with a different color, for example, black, and decorate it with sparkles on top.
How to properly decorate a store, classroom or study
You already know how to decorate a house or shop for Halloween with your own hands in an original way. The basis of the decor is a pumpkin, a lot of cobwebs with spiders and bats, skulls, bones and skeletons. You can add brooms, stuffed animals and dry branches to the decor of the holiday.
The more candles the better! A gauze web hung on all pieces of furniture will fit well into any interior. “Marinades” in jars look creative and creepy: jaws, eyes, teeth, claws floating in mucus or bloody liquid.
