How to attach the cornice to drywall
When, at the end of the repair work, it comes to decorating the window opening with suitable curtains (curtains), there is a hitch. Fastening decorative elements to the plasterboard covering the ceiling and walls is considered by non-professionals to be either a very difficult or completely impossible task.
But this is an erroneous opinion, because if you choose the right method and materials, then you can easily cope with such a thing as fixing the curtain rod on the ceiling drywall. In this article, we will analyze the available options, tell you what you need to work, how to do everything correctly, analyze the nuances of the process and what to pay special attention to.
How to choose a cornice for a plasterboard ceiling
First of all, you need to choose the right cornice. It is a structure with which the curtains are attached to the drywall - curtains made of thin fabric.
Where is the best place to put the cornice, on the ceiling or walls? The first option will increase the room visually, and the second is simply more convenient to use.
Ceiling cornice is ideal for an apartment with low ceilings. In addition, it is a great solution in cases where it is not possible to attach it to the wall. In addition, such curtain rods can be used for curtains dividing a room into functional zones, because they can be mounted anywhere on the ceiling.
Advice. Cornices are selected for the interior of the room, its style, color palette, size, and also depending on the weight of the curtains.
According to the material of manufacture, the cornices are different, and each of them is suitable for fastening to drywall:
- Plastic - will be a good addition to plastic windows. They are lightweight and inexpensive, of different colors, but only curtains made of lightweight fabrics will withstand;
- Metal - they are aluminum, brass, stainless steel. Suitable for both modern and classic interiors, for heavy textiles;
- Wooden - will add grace to the room. They are made from such types of wood as coniferous, oak, cherry, walnut.
It is important to choose a cornice and by design:
- string, without a decorative panel - single-row, double-row and multi-row;
- rail or bus - balls with hooks move along the groove;
- round - a pipe with a diameter of 10 to 40 mm, if a second is provided, then its diameter does not exceed 3 mm.
- baguette - the guide and hooks are covered with a decorative strip.
Now we know with the help of what and how to hang the curtain on the drywall. Let's figure out how to fix the cornice itself.
How to hang a curtain rod on drywall
The choice of mounting method depends on the specific situation.
There are three options: the embedded slats are installed in the frame for the gypsum board, the sheets are equipped on the supporting wall, the cornice must be installed directly on the drywall.
Eaves fastening methods (types of fasteners)
To install the cornice on drywall, use the following consumables:
- Self-tapping screws, screws;
- "Butterfly" dowel made of plastic - after screwing in, its two wings firmly fix the screw, opening on the back of the gypsum board;
- The Molly dowel made of carbon steel is similar in action to the butterfly, but has 4-8 drop-down elements. It has an original design, withstands a load of up to 45 kg, and is positioned as the most reliable;
- Dowel "umbrella" - unfolds in the form of an umbrella, which increases the distribution of the load;
- Metal dowel screw (drive) - independently screwed into the sheet, as it has a screw thread. Used for medium-weight curtain rods.
Advice. Fasteners are used depending on the chosen method of installation of the cornice and the material of the walls and ceiling.
Cornice installation process
Most often, assuming in the future the fixation of decorative elements on a plasterboard surface, so-called mortgages are made for it in the right places at the stage of arranging the frame.
Advice. This is a timber or slats of a suitable section, from wood dried according to the correct technology, treated with fire retardants and antiseptics.
They are installed in a metal crate so that the fasteners can easily reach, and are attached to the main surfaces using the same dowels or anchors.
Sheathing the frame with sheets of drywall, the location of the mortgages is applied to the outside. When installing the cornice, such a scheme will help you find them, mark the necessary places, fix the cornice brackets with self-tapping screws and dowels, using a screwdriver or an ordinary screwdriver.
Fixing the eaves to the load-bearing walls
This option is useful if the drywall was glued directly to the surface with mounting glue, that is, the frame was not used. In this case, the gypsum board is in direct "neighborhood" with the load-bearing wall, as if relying on it.
Therefore, the installation of the cornice is carried out according to the classical scheme:
- Markings are made on the walls.
- Holes are made in the right places with a drill.
- Dowels are driven in for hanging the cornice brackets. Fix them with self-tapping screws, trying to act carefully and not damage the drywall.
Fastening the eaves directly to drywall
The third method is used if no mortgages are provided, but the plasterboard surface does not adhere to the supporting structures.
Advice. In this case, you need to act outside the box so that the fasteners do not push through the sheet.
For this, the aforementioned "butterfly" and "molly" dowels are used. After being introduced into the gypsum board, brackets are hung on them, which are fixed with screws.
First, as usual, markup is done. For the "butterfly", holes of the required diameter are carefully drilled, no more - this is important. Then plastic dowels are inserted into them.
Drives are screwed into drywall using a screwdriver with a cross head.
The molly installation also involves pre-drilling the holes. Before mounting, the walls of the dowel are bent with a knife and the existing bolt is unscrewed. It is screwed back all the way when the "molly" is inserted into the drywall while fixing the brackets.
