How to hang a curtain rod on the ceiling
How to properly hang curtain rods relative to the window and ceiling: at what height and at what distance? In this article, you will find useful information and tips for attaching and installing these interior elements.
How to fix the curtain rod on the ceiling
The question "how to properly hang the cornice in the room, how it should be fixed on the wall and ceiling" is of interest to most people who decide to independently change the interior of their apartment and decorate it with new curtains or curtains.
Having chosen curtains and cornice suitable for the room's decor, it is necessary to understand the fastening and understand which option is suitable for each individual room.
Usually, according to the type of fastening, the cornices are divided into two large groups - ceiling and wall, which must be fixed on the ceiling or on the wall, respectively, during installation.
But the choice of the cornice and fastening depends on several important factors:
- Ceiling heights.
- Width of the window.
- The distance between the tiers of the cornice is the rods holding the tulle and the curtains themselves.
Considering these criteria, it is quite easy to choose the right curtain rod with the right type of fastening for any room and understand how to hang the curtains correctly.
We decide on the place of attaching the curtain rod to the wall
The first step is to mark on a schematic image of a room (or at least a necessary wall with a window opening) exactly how to position the cornice, which will be attached to the wall.
This option is almost universal and is suitable for a room with any ceiling height and window width, you just need to measure everything carefully so as not to overshoot and not overpay for materials that will then turn out to be useless.
Often, wall cornices are fastened, stepping back a few centimeters from the edge of the window opening to the side and approximately in the middle of the distance between the upper edge of the window and the ceiling. This is done so that the curtains and tulle cover the entire window completely, without leaving even small cracks through which everything that is happening in the room could be seen from the street or from a neighboring house.
It is also quite common when the curtain closes about 10 centimeters of the wall from the edge of the window - in almost any apartment you can find a similar solution, it can even be called "classic".
At what height to hang the curtain rod from the ceiling
The height of the cornice is a very important criterion, since it is based on it that a decision is made about the length of the curtains - whether it is necessary to choose a shorter or longer fabric in the store, whether it is necessary to take the curtains to the atelier so that they are hemmed there for the required length.
At what distance from the ceiling to hang the curtain rod?
In most apartments, proudly called "Khrushchevs" (small apartments in typical panel / brick houses), the standard length of curtains, and, accordingly, the height of the cornice ranges from 2 meters 30 centimeters to 2 meters 40 centimeters.
In houses with high ceilings, this range is slightly different - from 2 meters 50 centimeters to 2 meters 70 centimeters.
As you can see, the curtains in both cases will have to be modified, adjusting to a specific layout, because now in most large stores curtains are sold in lengths of 2 meters 80 centimeters (the most popular option, since it will never be insufficient, "too short" for any apartment ).
Step-by-step installation instructions
Instructions are an important part of any repair, since without a detailed description of the steps to assemble the cornice, you can easily get confused and do something wrong, and sometimes even ruin the product by accidentally trying to connect two parts that do not fit each other and breaking one of them.
In this case, most likely, it will be impossible to restore the structure and it will be necessary to start choosing a new cornice and all additional details like rings and hooks, which should fit not only the curtains selected for each room, but also the cornice itself - everything should look organically on a rod (a stick or a hollow tube on which curtains are attached), so as not to destroy the integrity of the view of the room.
To begin with, immediately after purchase, you need to check the complete set of the cornice - the following details should be in place:
- Rod (main part of the structure)
- Bracket (the fasteners themselves, usually there are two or three of them in the kit, because the cornice is attached to the wall at two ends, but in many modern models it is possible to fix the cornice also in the middle of the rod)
- Two decorative rod tips
- Rings and hooks, if necessary, so that the curtains can be hung (suitable for models with curtain tape)
IMPORTANT! If everything is in place, you can begin to install the curtain rod and then fix the curtains on it, but first you need to make sure that the rod, along with the brackets, does not fall off and fall to the floor under the weight of the fabric.
We mark the installation sites
Before hanging the cornice, you need to measure the width of the window and the length of the rod in order to understand exactly how best to position the structure on the wall so that the curtains completely cover the window, but do not interfere with the room.
Having measured and recorded all the information, you can start planning work using a schematic image of a wall with a window opening: it is necessary to provide indents that will be large enough so that you can slide the entire curtain there, if there is a need to open the window completely.
When everything is outlined on paper, you need to measure everything again on the wall itself, and only then can you start working. The first step is to install brackets for the rod so that the future cornice sticks tightly to the wall.
We fix the brackets
The bracket is one of the most important parts of the cornice, only because of them the bar is kept on the wall and does not fall to the floor under the weight of the curtains. That is why the stage of fixing the brackets must be taken with full responsibility.
In the places where the bracket will be held, you need to make small holes with a drill, install the mount itself and "weld" it to the wall using screws of a suitable size. Having finished with this business, you can start assembling the main structure of the cornice, and then hang the curtains.
Assembling the curtain rod
Now that the mounts are installed, you can tackle the main part of the future cornice. First you need to take the bar and "put" it into the slots of the brackets.
After making sure that everything fits in size and looks normal, the bar must be removed, threaded rings with hooks on it (optionally with curtains already sewn / otherwise attached), then put the main part of the cornice on the brackets again, fix the structure and put the tips on the edges rods.
Thus, following the instructions given in the article, you can easily decorate any apartment by hanging beautiful cornices and suitable curtains in the rooms.
