How to sew curtains on eyelets with your own hands

The option of sewing curtains on eyelets with your own hands is justified, when nothing of the ready-made curtains fits into the interior of the apartment, and you don't want to overpay and order it in the atelier either. It is easier and cheaper to sew the curtain yourself by choosing the fabric of the desired color and texture.

Modern designers offer an original way of attaching curtains with eyelets.

Description and varieties of eyelets

Eyelets are a European invention. These are accessories with which you can very easily and quickly hang the curtain on the cornice. They are also used to securely fix various banners, awnings and draperies. Most often, eyelets are in the form of metal, wood or plastic rings.

Before sewing, you should choose the fabric, design and style, the pattern that you want to see on your product.

But, they can be of another form:

  • rectangular;
  • triangular;
  • in the form of outlines of flowers or animals.

To fasten the curtains, rings of large diameter are used (2.5 - 4.5 cm - they are put on directly on the eaves guide) and small ones (connected to the eaves with hooks).

Note! To fix heavy curtains made of dense fabrics, metal rings are used, and a light tulle or organza can easily withstand a plastic accessory.

How to sew curtains on eyelets with your own hands

At first glance, it seems completely incomprehensible how you can sew curtains on eyelets with your own hands. Many beginners believe that it is unrealistic to do this at home. For a small product, it is better to choose a light-colored fabric or use a combination of several options.

Note! For sewing curtains on eyelets, preference should be given to fabrics that give minimal shrinkage after washing.

Preparing for sewing and creating a pattern

In order to figure out how to sew curtains on rings, it will not be superfluous to watch several training videos. It is not worth taking on faith everything seen and heard. But, this will allow you to get a general idea of what operations are to be performed.

For such products, it is recommended to choose lightweight, weightless fabrics.

Before starting work, you should also decide on the choice of the curtain rod, since the width of the purchased fabric is directly tied to the size of the curtain rod. In general, the width of the curtain should be 1.5 to 3 times the length of the curtain rod. The specific value of the gathering factor depends on how fluffy the folds will be in the finished product, but it is recommended to take less than 2 only for very light fabrics.

Tailoring of any product always starts with measurements. First of all, the length of the cornice is determined - this is the basis of the width of the curtain.

Another important point is not to forget about the machining allowances:

  • 8 - 10 cm - for folding the bottom edge of the canvas;
  • up to 25 cm - for folding the upper cut under the eyelet tape;
  • up to 4 cm - for the formation of each of the side seams.

Note! Before starting work, the purchased piece of fabric should be washed to minimize its shrinkage in the finished product.

Choice of tools and material

It will be possible to sew a beautiful and original curtain only if you have all the necessary tools and equipment. To make curtains on eyelets you will need:

  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • eyelet tape and eyelets;
  • chalk or soap for marking;
  • sharp scissors;
  • metal tape measure and long ruler;
  • threads, needles and pins.

The size, shape and material of the eyelets are chosen depending on the density of the fabric, the type of cornice and the features of the interior design of the room. For example, inexpensive plastic rings are traditionally used for medium-weight fabrics and light veils. They do not corrode, slide silently along the eaves guide and are easy to install at home, and a huge number of colors allows you to easily select eyelets for any interior.

eyelets
A variety of sizes of this accessory are used to decorate curtains.

The number of rings (must be even) depends on their diameter and the width of the fabric. The optimal distance between the eyelets is 15 - 18 cm (depending on the density of the fabric), but to obtain deeper folds, this size can increase to 22 cm.

It is important to take into account the section of the cornice itself, so that it is at least 1-2 cm.

The choice of fabric for curtains deserves special attention. The type of material and its color should fit into the designed interior of the room. This is the primary condition. But, it should also be borne in mind that when using eyelets, the fabric must be dense enough so that the eyelet tape is firmly glued to it. The ideal option is synthetic and semi-synthetic fabrics. They have sufficient density, almost do not fade and do not shrink.

For curtains, jacquard, satin, taffeta, calico, tapestry, velvet are often taken. Organza, veil or chiffon are suitable for tulle.

Note! If two curtains on grommets will be used in the decoration of the window, then their folds must be laid in a mirror image. Otherwise, the symmetry of the vertical folds will be broken.

Sewing curtains

At the initial stage, sewing curtains on eyelets is no different from making a model with a braid: a rectangle is cut out of the purchased fabric, taking into account all processing allowances.

fabric for curtains
In order for everything to work out as intended, you need to take fabric that does not crumble on the cuts. Eyelets are chosen for cornice and fabric, and not vice versa.

Further, a completely natural question arises - how is the eyelet tape sewn onto the curtain? There is no single standardized answer to this question. For lightweight fabrics, the upper cut will first have to be tucked several times to the width of the tape. For heavier and denser materials, it is enough to immediately make and iron out a bend of 1-2 cm, under which it will be laid. Further, the procedure is as follows:

  1. The tape is laid with the glue side up and with the help of an iron it is connected with the upper part to the folded section of the fabric. For convenience, the tape can be fixed with pins during processing.
  2. The pins are removed, the section of the curtain along with the tape is folded and glued with an iron over the entire plane.
  3. A "control" ironing of the section of the curtain with the tape from the front side is done - for better gluing of the tape.
  4. After cooling, the lower edge of the resulting plank is sewn on a sewing machine (stitch width is medium) and ironed.
  5. The bottom and side cuts are processed - tucked in, overcast and stitched.
  6. Holes for eyelets are marked and cut out along the inner diameter.
  7. The eyelets are installed by connecting the lower and upper halves (until they click).

You should be especially careful: after the final eruption, nothing can be changed.

Note! When fixing the eyelet tape on the canvas, it should not reach the edge of the curtain by 2 cm, which will be used when forming the side seam.

Decorating curtains

Among the popular ways to decorate such curtains, it should be noted:

  • various grips;
  • the use of decorative bows;
  • placement of toys and pictures on curtains in children's rooms.

How to properly hang and use curtains in the interior

With correctly selected and installed eyelets, the process of fixing the curtain to the eaves takes a few minutes. It is enough to free one end of the guide and slide the curtain rings onto it. If small diameter eyelets were used, then each ring is attached to the hook of the cornice.
