Classification and selection of curtains on grommets
Eyelet curtains have been gaining popularity lately. To explain this fact is quite simple: this method of fastening combines stylish appearance and functionality. What are curtain eyelets? What to look for when choosing a fabric for such curtains? What is the most suitable material for eyelets? For which styles is this mounting method best suited?
Varieties of eyelets
Manufacturers offer eyelets, as they say, for every taste. Most often, this mount is made of steel (copper, brass), wood or plastic. The most practical option is plastic. It is not damaged by washing and does not leave rust stains. The only drawback is that plastic eyelets fade when exposed to direct sunlight.
An important nuance: the eyelets must withstand the weight of the canvas. For lightweight canvases, plastic holders are ideal, but thick tapestry or brocade curtains are best attached to metal or wooden eyelets.
The size of the eyelets varies from 30 to 55 mm. Manufacturers offer not only the usual models with round holes, but also models with square, oval, triangular and polygonal elements. This curtain accessory can be decorated with ornaments, rhinestones, leather pieces and so on. The surface of the eyelet can be either matte or glossy.
Advantages and disadvantages of eyelets
Before deciding in favor of this method of attaching curtains, weigh the strengths and weaknesses.
First, about the "pluses":
- Such curtains (also called curtains with rings inside) easily slide along the cornice, no additional devices are required.
- The canvases hold perfectly, do not slip, and you do not have to constantly adjust the curtains and hook them on the hooks over and over again.
- Before washing, you do not need to remove the eyelets, they are securely attached to the canvas. After washing, during ironing, the eyelets do not interfere.
- Luxurious appearance, smooth elegant folds serve as a decoration for any interior.
- It is possible to choose the right model for any style and design.
There are also "disadvantages", although there are few of them:
- It is difficult to form multilayer models from canvases on eyelets; additional cornices are required.
- Not every fabric is suitable for "fitting" eyelets. In addition, during installation, you need to take into account the shrinkage of the canvas in advance so that the result meets your expectations.
Varieties of curtains
It should be noted that eyelets are not suitable for every canvas. Of course, visually, this mounting option is considered more advantageous compared to the others, but it is important to choose the right one for a specific material.
Curtains
Blackout curtains are the main touch in the design of the window opening. Thanks to the fastening on the eyelets, a natural gathering is formed on the canvas. This moment is especially relevant for satin and silk fabrics. For a harmoniously complete interior, the curtains are complemented with airy tulle. But, remember that curtains play a major role in this curtain duo and the main focus is on them.
A correctly chosen curtain fabric will visually increase the space, and the straight vertical lines obtained thanks to the eyelets will add decorativeness to the entire interior.
Curtains
It is ideal for those who like light and airy interior. Thanks to the curtains, the room is filled with an atmosphere of coziness and comfort. Translucent fabric will effectively complement almost any interior.
Filament curtains
String curtains on eyelets are one of the most effective applications of this kind of fastening. The design looks somewhat unusual, but it immediately becomes an accent in any interior. It is worth noting that such curtains will "take root" in various design concepts.
And if this structure is fixed on the ceiling cornice, then the filament curtains on the eyelets can be used for zoning the space.
Combined curtains
Another topical option for lovers of exclusive interiors. Such a design solution will make the decor of the window opening original and unique. At the same time, combinations of combinations can be very different: from using one type of canvas of different colors, to paintings of different textures and even different models.
The most common duo of dense curtain fabrics with roman or roller blinds.
If you use fabrics of different colors and textures for double curtains, let the eyelets themselves be of a neutral shade.
Long or short?
Eyelets are a versatile attachment method. It is ideal for both long curtains and short curtains.
Often curtains on eyelets are additionally decorated with a lambrequin. With its help, the cornice is closed, and the air tulle becomes the logical completion of the structure.
Floor-length grommet curtains are, as they say, classics of the genre. This model is more common than others. The design of the window opening in this way perfectly "gets along" with different styles, and is ideal for both ultra modern interiors and retro trends. Floor-length curtains allow you to beautifully decorate not only the window, but also part of the wall, which means that it becomes possible to elegantly hide pipes, radiators and other things that spoil the impression of the interior as a whole.
The only caveat: curtains should not interfere with the free movement of households and pets.
Choosing a fabric
As already mentioned, eyelets are not suitable for every canvas. However, today curtain fabrics are presented in a sufficient assortment, which means that you are guaranteed to find an option that is ideal for your interior.
- Tapestry. The fabric is perfect for heavy curtains. Differs in tightly intertwined fibers, and, as a result, reliably protects from sunlight.
- Poplin. Interlacing of medium density yarns. It can be made from both natural and synthetic fibers.
- Velvet. The main difference between this material is its volume and high weight. Such curtains will reliably protect not only from the sun, but also from cold air currents.
- Satin and satin. A distinctive feature of these materials is the glossy surface on one side of the canvas. With an average density, the material does a good job with the UV protection function.
- Brocade. According to the designers, this is not a fabric, but a real work of art. Differs in rich texture and variety of patterns. Today this material is only available in synthetic "performance". Reliably protects from bright light and cold air.
- Cotton. The main advantage is naturalness, which is especially important if allergy sufferers live in the apartment. But this is where the list of "strengths" of this material ends. It is unable to protect either from ultraviolet radiation or cold air.
- Viscose. Curtains made from this fabric are a little "crispy" to the touch. The canvas drapes perfectly and keeps folds. Viscose is appreciated for its durability and ease of maintenance.
- Organza. Lightweight synthetic material. Most often used as an addition to curtains.
- Tulle or lace. Today there is an opportunity to purchase this material both in a natural "performance" and in an artificial one. Usually, tulle carries an exclusively decorative load, without interfering with the penetration of light, and even more so, not protecting from cold air.
Diy curtains on eyelets
To sew the curtains on the eyelets yourself, you need accuracy and strict adherence to the instructions.
Required materials and tools for DIY sewing:
- Fabric cuts, accessories.
- Eyelet tape.
- Scissors.
- Sewing machine.
We start with the cuff. It will require a strip of fabric of any length, 25 cm wide. We bend the strip in half and iron it. We apply an eyelet tape to the fold line on the wrong side and use an iron to fix the dublerin on the fabric. The front side is the one to which the eyelet tape is attached.
After that, smooth the strip of fabric that remained under the eyelet tape inward. And bend the upper allowance to the front side and also "pass" the iron.
Attaching the rings themselves at home can be quite difficult, so it's best to contact a tailor shop.
Curtains on eyelets are a stylish and functional attribute of any interior. And with minimal sewing skills, you can make such curtains yourself.
