Description of long curtains in the kitchen

Many articles on the kitchen recommend choosing short curtains, up to the windowsill. Nevertheless, a considerable part of people buy curtains for the kitchen to the floor such that their ends even lie on it. The article will help you choose long curtains for your kitchen room.

Important! Considering that the kitchen is an area that has an open flame, prioritize safety.

Pros and cons of short and long curtains in the kitchen

Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Let's talk about them.

The advantages of short curtains in the kitchen include:

  • Ease of use and maintenance. Short curtains are easier to wash and collect less dirt than long curtains. Hanging such curtains is also incomparably easier. They weigh less and, due to their smaller size, are not so much confused.
  • Greater fire safety than long ones. The latter, under the influence of the wind, can touch the flame of the stove. The short ones just won't reach.
  • Access to the windowsill. Long curtains cover it. This is especially inconvenient if it serves as a functional continuation of the countertop.
  • A good solution for kitchens with low ceilings. Long curtains conceal an already small height in them.
  • Lower price. Sewing short curtains does not require as much fabric as sewing long ones. Less fabric is consumed, which means lower cost.
pluses of short curtains
Short curtains in the kitchen have many advantages.

The disadvantages of short curtains are:

  • Narrow focus. Short curtains are sewn, as a rule, for a specific window. For a window opening of other sizes, most likely, they will not work.
  • Open heating radiators. If they are ugly and old, short curtains cannot cover them.

The advantages of long curtains in the kitchen include:

  • Stylish appearance. Long curtains attract attention and create a special mood in the room. It's rare to say about short ones.
  • Concealment of flaws. The latter can be the unevenness of the wall or floor, ugly looking heating radiators, etc.
  • Expansion of space. With the right choice of color and style, long curtains make the room visually wider and more spacious.

The cons of long curtains are a reflection of the pros of short ones.

Long curtains:

  • Higher price. It takes much more fabric to make.
  • The inability to use the space of the windowsill at night.
  • Heavier wash and care. This is explained, in particular, by the fact that the main dirt is concentrated and collected closer to the floors.

Long kitchen curtains have both pros and cons.

Important! What appears to be a plus for one person can often be a minus or neutral property for another. In particular, for owners of spacious kitchens, the ability to have free access to the windowsill is not always required. For small owners, on the contrary, this is a fundamentally important property.

Varieties of long curtains

There is a very wide variety of them. Let's describe the most common ones.

French

They differ from other curtains in that they consist of several sections and have fluffy folds of fabric falling down along the entire length of the canvas. They can add charm to even a modest and simple kitchen. Perfect for rooms on the ground floor as they protect well from prying eyes.

The folds on the French curtains are preserved both in the raised and lowered position. Their number, splendor and height can be adjusted at your discretion. The main disadvantage of French curtains is that a large amount of fabric is spent on their manufacture. Washing and ironing also requires a lot of effort.

The main styles of interior decoration for which French curtains are suitable: classicism, neoclassicism, baroque, rococo, empire style.

Thread (Kiseya)

Curtains that are completely non-standard and unusual for most of the inhabitants of our country. They do not form a single fabric cloth. They are a set of threads going down, fastened at the top with a strong, dense strip of fabric. They let light through well. Even on a cloudy day, the kitchen will not be dark. They are distinguished by a very wide variety of materials and colors.

The threads, as a rule, are treated with compounds that do not allow fat and other substances to be absorbed into them. They are cheaper than other types of curtains. The main disadvantage is that moving objects (for example, cabinet doors) can easily snag and break the thread.

Sheer curtains are made up of many long, straight threads.

Styles in which filament curtains look best are minimalism, pop art, hi-tech.

Classic

We believe that almost everyone knows what they are. These are the usual, familiar to everyone, curtains. A pair of curtains or one-piece canvas from ceiling to floor. On the sides there is a frame of two canvases, on top for decoration there can be a lambrequin.

Curtain fabrics can be combined as you like, especially if the kitchen is spacious. For small kitchens, classic floor-length curtains are not very suitable, they hide the space, give the impression of something bulky, inappropriate.

Classic curtains are ordinary curtains or drapes.

You can use it in a room with any interior style.

Panel (Japanese)

They differ from everything that is considered to be curtains. In appearance, they rather resemble the doors of wardrobes. Consist of panels 40-80 cm wide. The fabric is stretched between the slats moving along the runners. When the curtains are opened, the panels slide in one behind the other.

Very little fabric is required to make. Color, type of material, texture and ornament can have whatever the owner desires. You can make not one row of panels, but two.

Japanese curtains are long sliding panels.

For some windows, they are completely unsuitable. This happens if there is no place near the windows where the panels can be moved. When installed, they will partially block the window opening, which is completely unacceptable for a small kitchen.

They look most harmonious in rooms in the style of ethno, hi-tech, minimalism.

With lambrequin

Lambrequin is a decorative transverse strip of fabric on top of curtains. In fact, it is a cropped horizontal curtain.

In addition to a purely decorative function, the lambrequin also performs a practical one, it helps to hide the cornice and fasteners. With the right choice, using a lambrequin, you can visually change the size of the window opening, expand or narrow it.

A pelmet is an additional strip of fabric that covers the cornice.

Curtains with a lambrequin are suitable for Provence, Baroque, classics.

Roman

They are not yet very popular in our country. They look like a fabric cloth, which, when raised, forms wavy folds. On the sides, the fabric is held by the cross bars.

Suitable for any kitchen, but especially in demand for small ones. They look very elegant, while taking up a minimum of space. The disadvantages include the high cost. It will be cheaper to buy and install ordinary blinds instead.

Options for the design of curtains to the floor (with photos, new items)

As an example, consider illustrative photos of long curtains in kitchens, new items in various styles.

Hi-tech and minimalism

  • Photo 1. We see a spacious kitchen. The predominant colors are white and brown. Wide long table top. Some of the cabinets are hinged, but there is furniture in the entire wall between the stove and the window. It shows built-in technology. The curtains are made of a monochromatic, brown-looking material, very long, with their ends lying right on the floor. You cannot envy a housewife, it is very difficult to keep all this in perfect cleanliness.
  • Photo 2. There are no kitchen rooms with such a layout in apartments. The predominant color is white. The window overlooks, apparently, a terrace or balcony. The table top runs along the wall. In the middle of it is a ledge (small, meter and a half), behind which the dining area begins. There, near the wall, is a white oval table. The curtains are light-light brown. Translucent and on the verge between pure white and light brown. There is a feeling of hovering their curtains over the floor, as if the fabric was holding nothing.
  • Photo 3. Very small kitchen, every piece of free space is used. The predominant color is white. You wonder how in such an environment they could still harmoniously accommodate a long curtain to the floor. It is translucent, bluish. The kitchen is protected from prying eyes by horizontal blinds built in between the window frames.
  • Photo 4. Kitchen in a studio apartment. It is separated from the living room ... nothing separates it, only the floor of a different color. The predominant color of the room is light gray. The floor of the living area is knocked out of this picture, lined with light brown linoleum. Wide windows for the whole apartment are made in the same style. The curtains are almost transparent and made of lightweight fabric.
  • Photo 5. A well-organized contrast is striking in this kitchen. The whole room (even the floor) is white. The curtains are classic, dark brown in color, the designer made an accent on them. On the side of the table top, almost perpendicular to it, is an elongated oval table. The hob is as far away from the window as possible.

Classic

  • Photo 6. Before us is a medium-sized kitchen, apparently in a private house. This is evidenced by the entrance to the room on the left of the picture. There is no such thing in apartments, it is practically on the entire wall of the door. The main color of the kitchen is white. The window starts from the wall to the left and ends about a meter from the countertop to the right. The curtains come down straight from the ceiling. To visually increase its height, they are made in a vertical strip.
  • Photo 7. Cozy little kitchen, it looks a little faded. If it were not for the windows from ceiling to floor, it is quite possible to consider that you are in the Khrushchev. One long curtain, gathered from the bottom with a tack. There is a pattern of flowers on the fabric of the curtain. With well-placed lighting, everything would probably look beautiful, and this creates the impression of “coziness in poverty”. Everything is neat and tidy, but there is not enough variety or something.
  • Photo 8. Kitchen for fans of red. I don’t know if this can be attributed to the kitchen in the classic style, in the commentary to the picture it is written that the kitchen room is made in it. The front of the cabinets is made in a rich red color. The curtains at the window match it even in shades of tone and are made of dense fabric, do not touch the floor, end somewhere in 10 centimeters above the flooring. The wall opposite to the countertop slightly relieves perception. It is white with built-in lights. There is a mirror between the windowsill and the floor, a huge red rosebud is reflected in it. It occupies two thirds of the floor area.

Provence and country

  • Photo 9. We see urban cuisine striving to be similar to the country one. Abundance of wood and other natural materials.Translucent curtains run down to the floor, but do not touch it. Above the curtain is framed by a lambrequin. The window itself is very wide, from wall to wall.
  • Photo 10. Small, cozy kitchen with a predominant brown color. Everything looks harmonious and natural. Worktop from one end of the room to the other. The color of the curtains, literally lying with their lower ends on the floor, between yellow and brown. Because of the lighting, you can't tell. Their fabric looks very dense.
  • Photo 11. An example of a corner kitchen in country style. The windows face two adjacent cardinal points. The countertop with the washbasin is removed from the nearest window by 50 centimeters. On one of the windows there are two curtains made of translucent green fabric, on the other there is only one. The walls are covered with plain wallpaper.

Materials (edit)

Most often, curtains are made from viscose, cotton, polyester and linen. Let's consider their main properties, advantages and disadvantages.

Important! Taking into account the purpose of the kitchen room, the specific microclimate in it, the materials of the curtains should be given primary attention. Ease of care for products, their service life, and safety largely depend on them.

Viscose

Artificial fabric made from natural material, cellulose. For the production of the latter, spruce and pine are most often used.

The main advantages of viscose include:

  • Softness and lightness of the material.
  • Bright colors. The dyes are absorbed by the viscose very well.
  • Hypoallergenic. The material does not cause allergic reactions.
  • Lack of the ability to electrify. Does not attract small debris and dust.
  • The ability to reliably imitate other fabrics: silk, linen, cotton, wool.

Viscose curtains are versatile and come in any color.

Disadvantages:

  • Easy to wrinkle. This is a defect in many fabrics.
  • Poor UV resistance. This is especially critical for curtains.
  • Shrinks strongly after washing. If you have ugly radiators in your kitchen that need to be covered, then it is better not to wash the viscose curtains a few days before receiving guests.

Cotton

Eco-friendly, natural fabric made from ripe cotton fruits.

Pros:

  • Easy to paint. At home, curtains without a pattern are not difficult to paint in a different color.
  • Good breathability. During the cold season, cotton curtains will not obstruct the air from the batteries.
  • Light weight. The housewife can easily hang them and remove them if necessary.
  • Antistatic. Dirt is not attracted to cotton curtains.
  • Easy to manufacture and maintain. Sewing cotton curtains is not very difficult.
cotton curtains
Cotton curtains are natural, environmentally friendly and lightweight.

Disadvantages:

  • The curtains fade when exposed to sunlight, gradually turn yellow.
  • They give significant shrinkage after washing, fade. Drying in a washing machine is not recommended.
  • Easy to crumple. If you decide to transfer them, for example, to the dacha and roll them up, you will have to iron them before hanging them.

Polyester

Synthetic fabric made from polyester fibers.

Pros:

  • It tolerates exposure to sunlight well, does not change its properties because of them.
  • Easy to care for. It is easily erased, dries quickly, practically does not wrinkle.
  • Low cost in comparison with natural fabrics.
  • Weak elasticity. Polyester blinders will not stretch over time.
  • Does not absorb odors. This is especially true for curtains in the kitchen.
polyester curtains for the kitchen
Polyester is a man-made material, easy to care for and does not fade.

Minuses:

  • Destroyed by chemical bleaching agents.
  • Poorly colored. It is quite difficult to make a drawing on such a fabric.
  • Electrifies. This disadvantage is especially significant for long curtains. Dirt and dust will constantly adhere to them.

Linen

Natural fabric made from the plant of the same name. It has been known since ancient times.

Pros:

  • Good anti-static properties. Linen curtains do not collect dust.
  • High wear resistance and strength, as a result, long service life.
  • Excellent breathability. In winter, linen curtains do not interfere with the batteries from performing their functions.
linen curtains in the kitchen
Linen curtains are non-electrifying and breathable.

Minuses:

  • Easy to wrinkle.
  • Weakly keeps its shape.
  • Shrinks when washing. Not that very strong, but noticeable.

How to hang and tie curtains correctly

This can be done in four different ways:

  1. With ties. We tie the curtain with a strip or tape to the cornice. This method is not very suitable for kitchen rooms. From a practical point of view, it is also not optimal. It will take a long time to hang. Moving the curtain along the cornice is difficult.
  2. With eyelets. Recall that they are called rings made of metal or plastic, literally sewn into the curtains. Curtains on eyelets hang quickly and glide well, allowing you to evenly and easily create symmetrical folds. Not suitable for light and thin curtains.

curtains on grommets for the kitchen
Eyelets are rings sewn directly from the fabric.

  3. With hinges. They, like the ties, are made of strips of fabric. They can be hung up quickly, are able to withstand heavy loads, and are versatile. If the hinges do not have fasteners to hang / remove the curtains, you have to remove the curtain rod.
  4. With the help of rings. They are strung separately on the hollow cornice, and only then the curtain is attached to them. The best option if you want to hang a curtain with large folds. Of the minuses, one can note the noise of moving along the cornice and the difficulty of removing.

    curtains on rings
The rings are suitable for attaching pleated curtains.

Stylish, well-chosen curtains on the windows testify to the taste and wealth of the owners, however, in an effort to show all this in the best possible light, primary attention should be paid to practicality and safety. The air in the kitchen room often has high humidity, contains microscopic droplets of fat, dirt. Buy curtains so you don't have to worry about cleaning them. Be sure to do everything you can to prevent the ignition of these useful and wonderful items.
