Having made the right choice of color and type of product, you can create a complete and harmonious interior of the room. And how to do this, our tips will help you.

Did you know that ... Roman blinds have remained practically unchanged since the invention. The device and design of products have not undergone any fundamental innovations over time.

What are Roman shades

The curtains, invented several centuries ago, look simple. This is a wide or narrow, long or short fabric fabric with transverse strips as inserts. Raising and lowering the curtain to the required height is achieved by means of cornices equipped with lifting mechanisms. The width of the folds is regulated by the cross bars.

Roman blinds differ from roller blinds in their design.

Products are made from completely different materials (satin, linen, silk, organza and others). The texture, finish (embroidery, bottom decoration), fabric colors are selected taking into account the requirements of the interior. It is the color variety that makes Roman blinds in the interior universal for any style and room.

History of curtains

The Roman blind has a rich, more than two thousand year history and two more common names - Romanesque and Latin. The first mention of these textiles dates back to the so-called Romanesque era, which prevailed in the countries of modern Europe (mainly in its western and eastern parts).

Roman shades, when raised, form nice folds.

The Romanesque style became a key stage in the development of art and culture during the Middle Ages, although this trend received its name only at the beginning of the 19th century. It is distinguished by the severity of forms, conciseness, solidity of the elements. The Romanesque style is associated with knightly castles, crenellated towers with loopholes, the severity of the medieval era. During this period, curtains were not so much a decorative as a practical function. Before the appearance of shutters and glass, they protected the inhabitants of the castle from the cold and drafts. This interior element, created two centuries ago, can be called the ancestor of all modern products that decorate window and door openings.

Roller blinds and roman blinds
Roller blinds and roman blinds are very similar in appearance, but differ in the opening mechanism.

Design

The main element of Roman blinds is a cornice with cords attached to it, connected to the canvas.To preserve the shape and position of the product in case of bad weather, severe drafts or severe wind, a weighted cornice is provided in the lower part of the structure. If you need to raise or lower the curtains, securing them at the desired height, this is easy to do. As they say, pull the string, or rather, the chain that controls the position of the laces sewn into the canvas, and fix it. The mechanism for adjusting the height of the roman blinds is similar to the principle of operation of conventional blinds.

  • Cloth (natural or synthetic).
  • Weights at the bottom (plastic or metal).
  • Rods (hard or soft).
  • Drawstring or pocket (2 or more depending on the width of the curtain).

  • Practical products that fit windows of all widths and heights.
  • Versatility of application in interior decoration of premises.

  • No height restrictions due to adjustable lifting mechanisms.

The disadvantage of Roman blinds is their cost, but today in stores you can find budget options or sew products yourself, which will be an additional way to save the family budget.

Types of Roman blinds

Since the invention, the products have remained practically unchanged. They differ among themselves in the presence or absence of parts in the design.
Three types of Roman shades are common in interior design:

  • Classic.
  • Cascading.
  • Frameless.

Roman blinds are comfortable and easy to clean.

A classic roman blind consists of a fabric with even folds formed using a plate or strip. The cascading one differs from the "classics" by the presence of plates along the entire length of the canvas. The curtain is assembled like a cascade when raised. The folds are not completely smoothed out when the web is lowered.
The design of the frameless curtain is devoid of slats. When lifted, folds form on the sides of the product, forming a beautiful sagging of the fabric.

How to choose the right one (by design, type of material)

Roman blinds differ not only in the type of construction, but also in the type of opening. In the production of products, the following options are used:

  • Rope (lace).
  • Rotary chain.
  • Combined.
  • Elementary.
combined roman blinds
Roman shades can be combined with other types of curtains.

A rope curtain is the simplest and most common, controlled by a cord or rope. The principle of operation of rotary-chain models is similar to blinds. The combined ones provide for the simultaneous use of a rotor-chain and rope opening type. In elementary ropes or laces are attached to the slats.

Roman blinds also differ in the material of manufacture:

  • linen;
  • cotton;
  • silk;
  • atlas;
  • organza;
  • blended fabrics;
  • synthetic fabrics.

Advice. Linen curtains are very popular in the design of premises. Lightweight, natural and hypoallergenic material is appropriate to use in the bedroom, living room of the nursery. In the kitchen and balcony, it is better to refuse this option, since flax easily absorbs unpleasant odors and quickly becomes covered with dust.For these premises, it is better to choose products with synthetic fabrics.

The denser and more opaque material you choose for the Roman shade, the more reliable: do not forget about the weighting agent at the bottom of the curtain.

Bedrooms

The first function of a Roman shade in a sleeping and resting room is to protect from light and prying eyes. Products made of translucent materials will create twilight in the bedroom, in combination with curtains - complete darkness. Choose the curtain fabric in accordance with the color and material of the roman shade fabric. The curtain should be heavier, denser and darker than the "Roman".

Children's

A child will like a Roman blind with a roller mechanism if the color of the product does not irritate the eyes with brightness and excessive variegation. Drawings, photo printing, pictures on fabric will add originality to the room. If a multi-color palette is used in a room, monochrome canvases should be preferred. Successful options for using "rimoks" in the nursery are shown in the photo.

It is not necessary to make roman blinds to the full length of the window - three quarters will be more than enough. Especially if there are companions - thicker curtains.

  • Frameless models.
  • Products with print and pattern.
  • Canvases with rounded edges.

Advice. Roller blinds made of mixed fabrics are suitable for any environment.

Mounting methods

On the sash of the window

To decorate the movable sash, Roman blinds are used, equipped with a mini-cornice hidden under the flat body. It is not required to drill the window structure. There are two mounting options for installing the curtain.

  • Self-adhesive holder. Instructions
  1. Fasten the Roman brackets with screws and nuts.
  2. Connect with cornice.
  3. Slide the holder onto the frame and secure with plastic hooks.
  • On a self-adhesive holder. Instruction.
  1. Degrease the frame.
  2. Stick on double-sided tape.
  3. Press the upper cornice of the product to the adhesive tape.
  4. Hang up the curtain.

With the help of Roman blinds, you can also brighten up the severity of the blinds, add home comfort to the interior.

Advice.For flaps, use string-guided roman blinds. Then the canvas will be tightly pressed against the sash and will not flutter during the airing of the room.

On the frame

The process of installing a Roman shade on a frame is similar to attaching it to a window sash. To fix the structure, glue or double-sided tape is used.

  • Gluing the curtain rod onto tape or tape. Instruction.
  1. Use duct tape (included) or double-sided tape (if you made your own product).
  2. Degrease the surface of the frame.
  3. Glue tape, scotch tape to the surface of the frame.
  4. Attach and press down on the eaves body.
  5. Hang the canvas onto the curtain rod.
  • Installing curtains with glue. Instruction.
  1. Treat the frame with a degreaser.
  2. Apply glue.
  3. Attach the curtain rod.
  4. Hold the body with your hands until the glue dries.
  5. Hang up the curtain.

If it was not possible to find a canvas for a Roman shade of the required width, you can go for a trick: take the length as the width. Or use more than one canvas.

On the wall

Before proceeding with the installation of the "rim" on the wall, prepare the necessary tools and materials:

  • puncher (drill) for drilling holes;
  • self-tapping screws and brackets for fasteners;
  • building level for leveling the structure;
  • stucco or alabaster for fixation;
  • pencil (chalk) for marking.

Instructions for installing curtains on the wall:

  1. Using a level and a pencil, mark the holes for the cornice on the wall.
  2. Drill the holes with a drill.
  3. Install the brackets on the self-tapping screws.
  4. For reliable installation of the structure, the drilling site should be coated with plaster or alabaster.
  5. Place the staples on the curtain rod. Hang up the curtain.
wall mounting
The single roman blind can be fixed directly to the ceiling. Or you can provide a special niche in which it will be removed.

To the ceiling

For installation, a cornice or railing is used. The installation of the cornice is carried out in the same way as for mounting on the wall. If a rail is used, the following steps must be taken:

  1. Mark the installation location on the ceiling.
  2. Make holes for the support brackets.
  3. Install the rail on the brackets.
  4. Attach the canvas to plastic or metal hooks.

Advice. You can use hinges (purchased or sewn on your own) to attach the canvas to the rail. To make the curtain convenient to take off and put on, it is advisable to make them with buttons or Velcro.

placement of curtains
Roman blinds can be placed directly on the ceiling. The main thing is to choose a lightweight material and design, as well as to provide for possible loads on the ceiling.

Care and cleaning tips

Despite their simplicity and practicality, the fabrics and the structure of “rimoks” require careful handling and proper maintenance.

Basic rules of operation:

  • It is advisable to wash the fabric by hand or in a washing machine in a gentle mode.
  • So that the colors and texture do not deteriorate, the water should be at a comfortable 40-degree temperature, no more (the requirement depends on the type of fabric).
  • Before you start washing, you must remove the slats from the canvas. The elements are removed from the unstitched trimming border. If it is stitched, you will need to rip it up. After drying, it will have to be sewn up again.
  • For rinsing, it is better to use not the spin mode in the washing machine, but an ordinary shower.
  • It is recommended to iron a dried, slightly damp cloth through cheesecloth.
  • The cornice and other structural elements should be wiped with a slightly dampened cloth.
  • If stubborn, non-removable stains are found on the product, you should not remove them yourself, so as not to spoil the fabric completely. Better to go to dry cleaning.
cleaning roller blinds
Regular ventilation will significantly reduce the amount of settled dust. At the same time, fresh air will not only blow away dust particles, but also prevent unpleasant odors from penetrating into the fabric.

Regular washing will inevitably affect the quality of the linen.From frequent interaction with water and chemicals, the color may fade, the fabric may become deformed. To prevent this from happening, it is better to reduce the number of washes. This can be done by cleaning the material from dust at least twice a week. Due to the dust deposited on the fabric, the canvas looks dull and dirty. If you regularly clean it with a brush, dry cloth or vacuum cleaner at low power, you will often no longer need to wash your Roman wheels.

Use an anti-static spray to prevent dust from settling. Spray the product gently, far enough away from the curtain to avoid streaks or stains on the fabric.
Finally, we will give the hostesses some more useful tips on how to wash Roman shades.

The washing effect depends a lot on the material. Synthetic fabrics are the least whimsical and easily tolerate machine and hand wash using powder and detergents. With bamboo and rope "rims" the situation is more complicated. Not only can they not be washed, but also somehow wetted. If moisture gets on the canvas, the fibers of the fabric will swell, and after drying, they may deform.

use of cleaning products
It is necessary to remove dust not only from the woven surface, but also the mechanism. If this is not done, over time it will begin to jam or make an unpleasant squeak during the movement of the canvas.

Advice. To make washing in an automatic machine more gentle, put the linen in a special protective bag or, at worst, a regular pillowcase. This will protect the fabric from pulling and excessive kinking in the drum.

You should not wash curtains with photo printing, embroidery more than twice a year. Otherwise, the pattern will fade or crack, and clues will appear on the embroidered patterns.

If you want the curtains to serve you faithfully for a long time, buy products from trusted manufacturers. If you decide to sew a "roman" yourself, make sure of its quality when purchasing the material.
