Options and selection of curtains for the kitchen
Choosing the right curtains is a whole science. And if we are talking about such a functional room as a kitchen, then the task is even more complicated. Indeed, in addition to style and coziness, it is important to provide maximum comfort and convenience for work. What design of curtains for the kitchen would be most suitable? What to consider when choosing a model?
Criterias of choice
Before you go to shop for curtains, or sit at a sewing machine to create a masterpiece with your own hands, answer yourself a number of questions. Then the choice will be, as they say, "in the top ten".
- Style. Curtains cannot exist independently of finishing materials and pieces of furniture, their duty is to complement. Window decoration should represent the logical completion of the overall design solution.
- Practicality. It is unlikely that in any other room such serious "tests" as high temperature, grease, dust, humidity and the like fall on the curtains. It is good if the curtains for the kitchen will have a special treatment against dust and moisture, as well as fireproof impregnation. Today it is a daily necessity, not a luxury or a fad.
- The size of the room, and if the kitchen is part of a studio apartment, then the size of the kitchen area. It's no secret that a well-chosen design and pattern can visually change the space: balance an overly elongated kitchen, and make a small one a little more spacious, at least in terms of sensations.
- The size of the window opening and frame. If the window is small, then it is better to use only tulle for its decoration. Thanks to this solution, the window will appear larger, and there will be enough light in the room.
- Finally, it is worth deciding on the choice of colors and textures for the curtains.
Possible models
The choice of models of modern curtains for the kitchen today is greater than ever. However, the option you like may just not work for your kitchen. What to consider?
- The area and size of the kitchen, as well as the height of the ceiling, play an important role in the choice;
- How well lit the kitchen is;
- How household appliances are located;
- The style of the room.
Roll and Roman
For small kitchens, Roman or roller blinds are an excellent option: they do not overload the space, leave space on the windowsills (after all, there is not much space in the kitchen), create a stylish interior.
Roll structures are a shaft on which the web is wound. Lifting and lowering is carried out in different ways: either by means of a cord, or by means of a control panel, if the structure is equipped with an electric drive. The canvases can be stopped at any level.
According to the method of fixation, they distinguish between cassette (equipped with a special box, and attached to the window using self-tapping screws) and lightweight mini structures that are attached to adhesive tape.
Roman blinds are very similar to roller blinds.The main difference is that they do not wind on the shaft, but as they rise they are collected in voluminous horizontal folds. A special weighting material attached to the bottom edge prevents the canvas from sagging.
Natural fabrics are traditionally used in the production of Roman and roller blinds. Linen, cotton and chintz look great in the interior and decorate any design with dignity. However, for kitchen curtains, it is better to choose fabric with the addition of synthetics, as it is easier to clean and will last longer.
French curtains
Classic French curtains (also called awnings) are a very effective model. A distinctive feature is a lot of semicircular horizontal folds and volume, which is why French curtains cannot be used to decorate a small room, since they need a large area and high ceilings.
On loops along the bottom edge, a cord is pulled, pulling which you can get spectacular scallops along the entire length. And this is regardless of the position of the canvas - whether it is lowered or raised.
French curtains can be static or lifting. Manipulations are carried out either manually using a cord or using automation.
There are models of different lengths: from the "maxi" version to the floor itself, to mini-models that occupy only the upper part of the window opening. The length to the windowsill will be ideal for the kitchen.
Depending on the style and personal preferences, different materials are used for the manufacture of such curtains, but translucent tulle looks especially advantageous.
Austrian
Not the most frequent guest in our kitchens. It is a symbiosis of Roman and French curtains. From the first, the Austrian model borrowed the lifting mechanism, and from the second - spectacular folds.
If your kitchen is spacious and decorated in a classic style, you will not find better Austrian curtains. This model looks unusually beautiful on bay window openings.
Fixation is carried out on a special rail cornice. Austrian curtains are controlled using a lifting mechanism. You can independently adjust the lifting height of the canvases and the degree of drapery.
If you do not want to use tulle for such curtains, silk or light thin satin will be a worthy alternative to it.
Filament curtains
This variant of window decoration appeared with us relatively recently, however, the army of its fans is rapidly growing. The reason is simple: filament curtains are an oriental story, a kind of fairy tale that is so lacking in real life. The model, as the name suggests, consists of individual threads.
Kiseya is an unusual curtain, which means that it gives room for the imaginations of designers. Today, curtains of this type are offered in a wide variety of variations: from beads, bugles, beads, feathers, and this is not a complete list of the assortment.
The color palette will also pleasantly surprise: from pastel light colors to spectacular super bright shades.
Speaking about the advantages of such curtains, the following should be mentioned:
- Compared to ordinary linens, they get dirty less, are easier to wash and do not need to be ironed;
- Their cost is cheaper, which means that it is possible to update the interior more often;
- Since the design consists of separate threads, you yourself can give it any original shape.
As in the case with other models, the length of the thread curtains is chosen at your discretion: either to the windowsill (which is very convenient and functional), or to the floor (in this case, you will have to think about how best to arrange the muslin).
Another feature of filament curtains is that although they let in enough light, they will still provide the necessary shade in too sunny times. Kisei is made from synthetics (polyester), but there are also linen, viscose and woolen models.
Ideas for decorating kitchen windows
The generally recognized classics of the genre are considered curtains in a cage. For centuries, this particular color has been especially in demand and loved. Most often, a red and white plaid complements a country-style kitchen design. The room turns out to be very cozy. The main advantage of such curtains is that they do not have a front and a seamy side, since the threads are dyed even before weaving. The design itself can be different: from rustic (two canvases along the edges of the window and a narrow ruffle in the upper part), to the classic (two long curtains along the edges of the window opening).
Arched curtains. Different materials are used for them: from thin translucent tulle to viscose and cotton. The model looks very light and airy, leaves the window sill free, which is especially appreciated in the kitchen.
Knitted curtains. If you know how to hold a hook in your hands, then you are quite capable of creating a cozy room with your own hands. It is not at all necessary to embody the ideas of "aerobatics" in knitting. There are simple schemes with which window curtains are made. And, believe me, any hand-made thing is unique and can fill your kitchen with warmth and comfort.
Hinged curtains are another modern idea for an exclusive interior. Especially suitable for minimalist designs. Such models look stylish, easy to use, do not require time and effort to maintain. If the curtains on the hinges seem too simple for you, add decor: flowers (possibly crocheted), buttons, cords, and the like.
Tulle for the kitchen. Organza, veil and mesh are considered a variety of tulle. Since tulle is made from synthetic fibers, it does not need ironing and does not turn yellow when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
The veil can be natural; silk, cotton and fine wool are used for its manufacture. The mesh fills the room with air, visually enlarges the window opening and is very easy to clean.
Asymmetrical curtains. If you have a kitchen of irregular geometric shape or a non-standard window, do not rush to conclude that it is not in your power to decorate the room stylishly and conveniently. Asymmetric curtains are a worthy way out. Using such a construction, you are provided with a unique design and functionality.
Kitchen curtains are one of the most common options. And thanks to the rich assortment of colors and textures, you can make your kitchen unusual and cozy with designer curtains of such a familiar configuration.
For many, the kitchen is the main room in a house or apartment, since it is here that they spend a lot of time preparing dishes, and then, gathering with the whole family at the dinner table. Curtains, no matter which model you choose, play an important role in the decoration of this room.Thanks to them, you can easily create a cozy and beautiful space where you want to spend as much time as possible.
