How and how to properly wash resin from clothes
Pine or linden resin on clothing is a common problem during the warmer months. These marks can be annoying, but they can be removed very effectively.
How to prepare clothes
Mechanical removal of the maximum amount of the substance should be carried out before removing the pine resin from the clothes and proceeding to the chemical attack on the stains. This will make further use of solvents more efficient.
Note! Since the tree resin hardens when it dries, if possible, remove as much of it as possible from clothing as soon as possible.
When the drops of resin have already frozen, they should be removed with a sharp object - scissors or a small knife. This should be done carefully to avoid damage to the fibers of the fabric. In this case, the movements should be like a careful cut, and not like scraping, as otherwise there is a high probability of stretching the fabric or rubbing the dirt into the fibers even more.
If the fabric is delicate enough, the blade will not be able to remove too much dirt, and the structure of the fabric will still not be visible behind it. In this case, the item of clothing should be placed in a bag and left in the freezer for an hour and a half. Another option, which is relevant for large-sized items that do not fit in the freezer, is to put an ice pack on top of the stain. After that, it will be possible to easily remove a significant amount of resin, which will crack and crumble under mechanical stress.
Important! For especially thin delicate fabrics, exposure to cold is unacceptable, since with further mechanical cleaning, creases will inevitably form, which can lead to damage to the fibers.
However, after this, the stain will most likely remain, although it will become smaller. And before proceeding with its final removal, you must do the following:
- Use a dry brush to remove dust and dirt from the fabric to avoid new stains and streaks.
- If the item has a lining, rip it off so that only the dirty layer is processed.
- Place the contaminated area on a hard surface, such as a board wrapped in a napkin.
Options for removing tar from clothing
Before considering options for how to remove pine resin from clothes, you can familiarize yourself with some general recommendations:
- If flammable liquids are used to clean the fabric, then work should be carried out away from sources of fire.
- Things should be processed from the inside, after cutting the lining.
- Resin stain should be removed from the edges to the middle to prevent it from enlarging.
- The resin should not be rubbed.It is more effective to make blotting movements.
- For small soiling, cleaners and solvents are best applied with a cotton swab or tweezers.
- During the final wash of the product, it is worth using an air conditioner, which will get rid of a sharp unpleasant odor.
- It is better to dry things outdoors.
Solvents and tools at hand
Solvents are the most effective stain removers. They allow you to get rid of dirt quickly and reliably. However, at the same time, these substances are quite aggressive, so they are not suitable for all things.
Important! Before pouring in the solvent, you should test the effect on a small and inconspicuous area of the fabric. If nothing critical happens to it, the substance can be used.
The following remedies will help to effectively remove the stain:
- acetone and substances containing it;
- "White Spirit";
- turpentine;
- ammonia.
In this case, the order of work is as follows:
- Moisten a piece of cotton wool or a sponge with one of the solvents (using gloves or tweezers and a mask).
- Rub the stain until it disappears.
- Leave the thing for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse the product under warm water.
- Wash the garment, first by hand, then in a typewriter.
- Dry the item in the fresh air.
Heat treatment
In case the fabric is delicate and may react badly to the action of solvents, heat treatment of the contamination can be used. To do this, the item must be placed on a flat surface, covered with a paper towel or sheet of paper in the place of contamination and carefully run over it with a hot iron or hairdryer. In this case, the resin will gradually be absorbed into the napkins, so they must be changed periodically.
Important! In order to prevent the stain from moving to the clean part of the thing, it is necessary to treat the area around it with talcum powder, water or oil.
With alcohol
One of the most effective cleaning methods, but not suitable for every item. It should be used only for clothes made of dense fabric with a stable color, for example, jackets or jeans. To achieve the best result, the stain from the resin must first be mechanically removed, since otherwise the cleaning process with alcohol will take a long time.
The actions themselves are simple: you need to moisten a sponge or a piece of cloth in alcohol and wipe the stain until it disappears.
If the stain is large enough, it can be moistened with turpentine before treating with alcohol and left for half an hour.
Stain remover
Before using them, it is also better to prepare the garment by mechanical cleaning. Stain removers are made in the form of liquids or powders for different types of laundry. The selected product must be poured over the stain for 15-30 minutes, then rinsed and sent to the washing machine. When washing, in addition to the powder, you should also use a stain remover.
Gasoline
You should not use motor gasoline, but refined gasoline for lighters. It should be used in the same way as alcohol.
For further washing, you can add a stain remover or fabric softener to remove unpleasant odors.
A gentler method can be used to cleanse delicate fabrics:
- Combine kerosene and laundry soap in equal proportions.
- Treat the stain with the mixture.
- After an hour, wash off the treatment, wash and rinse the item thoroughly.
Important! Treatment with any aggressive substances must be carried out in a well-ventilated area.
How to remove odors and streaks after resin removal
After removing tar stains, especially when using solvents, streaks and a strong unpleasant odor may well be present on clothing. To get rid of the latter, fabric softener will help. Divorces can be removed in several ways.
Peroxide
You can use two options:
- Moisten a cotton pad or sponge liberally and rub the garment until the streaks disappear.
- Immerse the item completely in water diluted with half a bottle of peroxide and leave for half an hour. After that, the product needs to be soaked in a solution of soda ash and washed in a machine.
Important! You can use hydrogen peroxide exclusively for white clothes, as it discolors fabrics.
Soda and salt
This mixture will help remove odors and streaks even if fabric softener doesn't work. The processing process is as follows:
- the components are mixed in equal proportions;
- the mixture is placed on the problem area;
- a little warm water is poured on top with a pipette or a small spoon;
- the resulting gruel is rubbed into the fabric and left for half an hour;
- the area to be treated is wiped with a medium-hard brush;
- the product is washed in the usual way.
Note! When washing in a machine, it is recommended to use the extra rinse mode.
Mustard
It is necessary to use the powder form. Mustard must be mixed with boiling water until a creamy mass is obtained. After cooling with the mixture, you should treat the problem area of the thing and leave it for 20 minutes. The garment must be soaked in a stain remover for an hour and then washed.
There are many different ways to remove pine resin from clothing, depending on the type of fabric being treated and the age of the stain. However, in almost all cases, traces of contamination are removed extremely effectively.
