Making a seat for a high chair
Chairs are perhaps the most common piece of furniture. All the more, each of its owners wants to see their furniture comfortable and elegant. How to make it not only like this, but also stunningly unique, we will tell below.
Do-it-yourself well-made seat cushions for chairs become an excellent external accessory, at the same time helping not to experience discomfort from a long stay on the chair.
Selection of materials for work
Making a cape with your own hands should start with a conscious choice of materials. First of all, in this matter, it is necessary to build on whether the furniture will be used only indoors or outside it.
If outdoor use is planned, it is necessary to avoid the use of too delicate upholstery materials, such as silk. One of the alternative options is to bring the seats into the room if the use of the chairs is not planned for some time.
Choice of fabric
The following fabrics are most often used in the manufacture of these accessories:
- linen
- cotton
- lycra
- gabardine
The most practical of these materials is flax, it can be used even in the most unfavorable conditions for other types of fabrics. By itself, such a fabric is rather coarse, most of all will fit for the kitchen.
Cotton is a natural material that is great for indoor use. Outside them, it can get wet quite quickly, absorbing moisture. Like linen, it can be painted in different patterns, but unlike the first, it does not look as Spartan.
Lycra - pleasant to the touch, reminiscent of silk. Due to their characteristics, seats made of such material must be securely attached to the chairs, otherwise they can slide quite strongly on their surface. Shiny, plain lycra upholstery is a great choice for those who love bold, stylish accessories.
Gabardine is one of the most flexible and easy-to-handle materials. Has a sufficient density and is quite easy to wash.
To make it easy for the pillows to return to their original appearance, an additional snake can be provided to remove the filler during the washing period.
Note! It is not forbidden to wash the seat cushion together with the filler, but in this case it is necessary to strictly observe the temperature conditions for the material used.
Filler
For fillers, it is customary to use:
- natural materials
- feather
- sawdust
- buckwheat
- sheep's wool
- synthetic materials
- expanded polystyrene
- polypropylene
- foam rubber
- sintepon
Natural materials are highly environmentally friendly. At the same time, compared to synthetics, they have a much shorter lifespan, especially when it comes to outdoor use.
Down and feathers create a feeling of the highest softness in the seat, when using sawdust, conifers are usually used, thus creating an aromatic effect. Buckwheat filler creates additional support, but at the same time, it conveniently repeats the anatomical features of the human body. Sheep wool is not only soft and pleasant to the touch, but also has a warming effect.
Synthetic materials are also often used along with natural ones.
The most economical, but at the same time the least durable - foam rubber and synthetic winterizer. They are a shock-absorbing layer, foam rubber from this pair is less prone to caking. Expanded polystyrene granules resemble buckwheat in their properties, however, they are softer in structure, and also tend to cake.
The most practical synthetic material can be called polypropylene - it is a medium hardness foam filler with excellent durability characteristics.
How to attach the cover to the highchair
Before you start making covers, you need to decide how they will be attached to them. It is customary to use the following types of fasteners:
- strings
- elastic
- Velcro
The simplest to make are strings. It is enough to sew two “tails” from each corner of the pillow, and it will be firmly held on the chair. The elastic is better suited for round seats. When using Velcro, it is necessary that there is a counterpart of this mechanism on the chair.
What tools are needed
For self-production of a seat, in addition to the material and the selected filler, you will need:
- sewing machine
- scissors
- needles or pins
The process of making a seat for a stool in the kitchen
Having in our arsenal the materials necessary for the seat, we proceed to its manufacture.
- We mark on the fabric with a filler the size of the future pillow and accessories for attaching it. We make such markings with a margin (2cm will be more than enough) for comfortable sewing.
- Scissors cut the material into the required number of parts - for the pillow, two equal halves of the fabric plus strips for strings are enough. Or we sew on Velcro or elastic.
- Sew the pillow and fix the pre-made ties at the corners.
- We insert the filler, we cover the last side of our pillow. If a snake was used, just close it.
The sequence of actions is quite simple and with a little experience in just one day you can sew a dozen pillows.
