How to make a firebox in the country with your own hands
At the dachas, many people start a bathhouse, in which it is so pleasant to take a steam bath on the weekends. And in the houses themselves they build stoves or fireplaces, which not only bring warmth into the house, but also create coziness. In this case, it becomes necessary to arrange a place for storing firewood. A do-it-yourself firebox will help keep these items in order and create a colorful rustic surroundings at the same time.
What are the fireboxes
Before making a firewood, you need to decide on its type. Firewood stands are distinguished by several types. They are classified according to the type of placement:
- Outside
- On the veranda or porch
- In a shed or other technical room
In this case, it is important to correctly position the firebox. The peculiarity of firewood is that it takes up a lot of space and is heavy. The storage location for these items must be chosen so that the wood storage does not interfere with other work and movement around the site. At the same time, it is important that the products are located within reach of the house or bath. It will be inconvenient to carry heavy objects across the entire area every time.
The main requirement for this structure is to protect the wood from moisture. It is not so convenient and pleasant to kindle damp products. In addition, mold or mildew often grows on damp wood. Therefore, when creating a structure, it is important to consider how ventilation will be organized. To do this, they usually raise the floor and arrange two shelves for firewood.
Advice. Several fire boxes can be built. A large space can be set aside for storing these items in the far corner of the site, next to technical buildings. Make stands for a small amount of firewood near the house and the bathhouse. So they will always be at hand and will not take up much space.
Depending on the amount of wood during storage and the location of the stand, wood or metal material is used.
Wood piles
Making wood logs is quite simple. This material is usually used to equip spacious storage space. As a rule, wooden fire boxes are built as a small extension to a barn, to a bathhouse or a garage.
Wooden woodpiles are a small house made of timber and a roof. It can have lattice doors that provide good ventilation.
The floor is usually located above the ground. Sometimes one or two shelves are installed for firewood. This allows not to store firewood in a continuous manner, but to leave air gaps between them.
The approximate size of such a structure:
- Height 2 meters
- Width 3-4 meters
- Depth 1 meter
Metal woodpiles
Metal is most often used to create portable models. It is convenient to use them at home by the fireplace or by the stove in the bath.In this case, a woodpile can combine metal and wood. For example, the legs and handle can be made of metal, and the floor is made of wood.
The home firewood stand is small: height 50-60 cm, depth 25 cm, width 40-50 cm.
The structure for storing firewood in the dressing room has larger dimensions: height 60-70 cm, depth 50 cm, width 70-100 cm. Such dimensions are primarily due to the fact that the stove in the bath requires more firewood.
How to make a firebox in the country with your own hands
After a place for storing firewood has been chosen, materials and a model have been determined, it remains only to build a structure. The woodpile is built in the following order:
- Drawing is created
- Materials and tools are selected
- Preparing a place for work
- The main parts are assembled and installed in place
- Additional parts are attached: shelves, floor, roof
Advice. It is better to try your hand at building a log house with a large structure. It's easier to do. Small coasters are much more difficult to manufacture as they contain more detail and require care during construction.
Drawing and diagram
The first step is to create a project. To do this, first of all, you need to measure the place where the woodpile will be installed. The width is calculated first. If the woodpile is installed in a room: a garage or a shed, then it is necessary to leave a gap of 5-7 cm between the walls. This will create the necessary ventilation and comfort for work. Leaving a gap no longer makes sense, as firewood can fall into it.
The wood log frame consists of vertical and horizontal beams. The vertical bars are located in the corners. If the width of the storage is more than 1 meter, then an additional vertical beam must be installed for each full or incomplete meter.
The storage height is 2 meters. You do not need to do the above, since it will be inconvenient to shoot heavy objects from such a height. In addition, storing them at a height of more than 2 meters is traumatic.
If the woodpile stands on the ground, then 50-60 cm must be added to the height of the beams. This part of the beams will be dug into the ground for greater stability.
If the storage is built separately, then the roof must be made sloping so that precipitation does not linger on it. To do this, the height of the central beams should be 2-2.5 meters, and the parts from the edges should be 1.5-2 meters.
For the frame, it is better to choose a beam 15 cm wide. If shelves for firewood are supposed, then it is better to install them at a height of 1 meter from the floor.
For a woodpile, a small stand is usually created with a flat base, legs and a vertical frame. It is important to think about the handles so that the stand is easy to carry.
Selection of tools and materials
Do-it-yourself firewood box for giving on the street involves the use of different materials:
- Wood. It usually serves as a framework. For this, square beams are used. It is not recommended to use parts with a width of less than 10 cm, as they may not withstand the weight of the firewood.
- Brick. Woodpile walls are usually made of it, if it is located separately from other rooms. The brick will create the necessary microclimate in the storage.
- Plywood. It is usually used to make the floor and storage shelves. However, if the woodpile does not imply shelves, then instead of plywood, it is better to take wooden boards. They will better support the weight of the wood.
- Metal. A frame for stationary or portable woodpiles is often made of metal pipes. It is better not to use metal for a stand in the bath, as it can accidentally heat up from the outer wall of the stove or other objects, which can lead to burns. Metal sheets are convenient to use for the base and shelves.
- Slate or metal sheeting. A rain canopy is made of this material.
- Fittings. You will need furniture corners, door hinges, door handles.
Advice. In addition to standard materials, you can use any available tools: wooden pallets, old metal structures and even barrels.
In addition to materials, you will also need tools:
- Roulette
- Pencil
- Wood screws
- Drill
- Hammer
- Bulgarian and welding machine for metal.
Erection
The woodpile is built in four main stages:
- Wireframe creation.
- Walling.
- Installation of shelves and roof.
- Installation of doors and decorative elements.
If a brick building is planned, then first the main walls are erected, then the roof is installed, and only then a wooden or metal rack for firewood is mounted inside.
The wooden frame is created in the following order: first, vertical and horizontal lower beams are connected using furniture corners. Horizontal beams at a distance of 60-70 cm from the end of the vertical ones. After that, the frame is installed on the ground. At the same time, the vertical base is driven into the ground by 50-60 cm, a gap of 10 cm is obtained between the ground and the horizontal belt.
Then the middle horizontal beams are attached to the vertical ones. Finally, the highest parts are installed.
Then wall boards are attached from the back and sides. After that, the roof and shelves are installed inside.
Firewood for summer cottages
It is recommended to install an outdoor firebox separately from wooden houses. This is due to the fact that insects and mice start up in the place where firewood is stored. This neighborhood will attract them to the main building.
The storage locations may not necessarily be of the correct rectangular shape. Creative outdoor fire boxes can be round, oval, or triangular. There are many ideas for organizing firewood storage.
The triangle makes it easy to store and retrieve firewood. With this shape, objects are less likely to fall from the upper layers. Therefore, the triangular structure will be appropriate in families where children are growing up. It is much easier to fix slate, metal or tarpaulin flooring on such a structure.
The original version is a woodpile from barrels. It is quite simple to create it, you just need to fix 5-7 barrels with a slide. For fastening, you can use a wooden frame made of beams.
Do-it-yourself firewood shed
The construction for firewood can be quite simple - a convenient shelving with a canopy. This model is suitable for summer use. In spring and autumn, firewood can get damp here.
Do-it-yourself firewood shed
Wood sheds are usually built in villages or in houses where people live all year round. At the same time, the barn has doors that are locked. This protects items from heavy rain and snow. A locked door does not always protect against thieves, but at the same time it stops those who like to take what is bad. Considering that firewood is not cheap, it is often stolen.
Portable wood log
The portable model is often used in homes. The mobile version usually holds 5-10 items. It is usually made from a metal frame in which a wooden shelf is installed.
Advice.Additionally, it is better to create a separate metal stand for a portable firewood. The size of the delivery should be 10-15 cm longer and wider than the size of the drone itself. Thanks to this, debris from the wood will be collected in the stand.
Firewood stacking methods
After the woodpile is built, it remains to mark the firewood in it. There are several ways to lay out firewood to avoid mold and mildew. In addition, properly stacked firewood will not fall.
Secrets of placing firewood:
- The bottom layer is placed with a slight slope from the front side.
- To create a slope, the most low-quality objects with knots, irregularities are placed at the bottom.
- Then they put several layers of dense, powerful blocks.
- Woodpiles evenly fill the entire space.
- If there are no shelves in the storage, then it is better to stack rows with a variable direction: along and across.
High-quality storage and neat stacking of firewood will not only ensure their safety, but also create coziness and comfort on the site.
