How to make a cat bed with your own hands
For most owners of four-legged friends, a cat or dog is a full member of the family. People sometimes care about them almost more than about their own kind. Cats have their own bowls, toys, and resting places.
And all this pleasure is not cheap. Is it possible to save money and make a do-it-yourself bed for a cat?
Choosing a material
The cat will thank you for the natural materials bed. Natural cotton or wool are considered ideal for making cat beds. But you can also use synthetic materials.
There are several criteria that should be taken into account when choosing a fabric for a couch:
- It is better if the color of the fabric matches (or almost matches) the color of your pet. In this case, the fallen out wool will not be very noticeable, and the bed will always look dignified.
- Try not to use metal fittings to avoid the possibility of static electricity.
- The material should not have a strong odor. Cats have a wonderful sense of smell, and if the cat does not like the smell of the bed, you will not force her to sleep in this place by any means. Therefore, so that it does not turn out that your efforts were in vain, carefully consider the choice of fabric for the couch.
- It is far from always worth purchasing new canvases. Many people successfully use old clothes made of natural wool, felt or foam rubber - both economically and practically.
- Finally, the material should be easy to wipe off, not accumulate dust, please the pet and be safe for him.
In addition to the above aspects, there is one more condition - the bed must complement the interior of the room in which it will be located. This applies to both the color scheme and the style.
The form
Today it is not a secret for anyone that the variety of shapes of benches for animals is not a bit inferior to the range of furniture salons for people. Various sizes and shapes are offered, if only the pet is satisfied.
The simplest form of pet bed is the pillow. What could be simpler: they took the fabric, sewed a square-shaped bag out of it, filled it with filler and you're done. Moreover, there is always the opportunity to make a pillow that perfectly complements any interior style. But there is a caveat: not all cats like to sleep on pillows. For the overwhelming majority, such a sleeping place turns out to be uncomfortable.
But special beds are in constant demand among the shaggy inhabitants of your apartment. Before buying or making a cat bed, watch it. Where does she like to sleep most of all?
If on sofas or armchairs, it is better to make a soft and deep model. If your Musya constantly sleeps on a stool or on a bench, feel free to purchase a wooden sofa, as an option, make a sofa for a cat with your own hands.
In addition, think in advance where exactly the bed will be located: if under a sofa or under a table, then the model should not be large, it simply will not fit in a secluded place.
If your pet is not used to hiding, choose any size option and install it where there is room. In the case when the cat has chosen a place near the battery, do not buy closed houses, it will be hot there.
There is a separate category of pussies who love to hide under the covers. For such pets, a sandwich-shaped bed is ideal. Outwardly, it looks very much like a huge sandwich, and the cat inside such a "house" feels safe and comfortable.
Another creative option for a cat house is a sleeping place disguised as a bedside table (or a large flower pot). For this purpose, either ordinary bedside tables (flower pots) are used, making additional holes in them at the required level, or constructions of a similar shape are specially created.
As you can see, there are a lot of nuances that you should pay attention to before purchasing or making a stove bench.
The idea for creating do-it-yourself beds
We offer a small master class on the manufacture of beds for cats. For starters, a budget and very practical option is a sleeping place made of an old sweater. All you need is an old sweater, padding polyester and thread.
A sofa for a cat with your own hands is done like this:
- The neck of the sweater is trimmed and sewn at the same level as the shoulder seams.
- The line is sewn at the level of the sleeves.
- Sleeves, space between arms, as well as the body of the future bed are stuffed with padding polyester.
- The bottom of the sweater is sewn.
- The sleeves (in the area of the cuffs) are inserted into each other and sewn together.
- The resulting ring from the sleeves is stuffed with padding polyester and sewn to the base. The sofa is ready.
If you wish, you can decorate the bed with appliqués or fittings on the topic - figurines of cats, paw prints, bows, and the like. By the way, you can additionally use an old blanket inside the bed to make your pet softer. But that's up to you.
If you are not afraid of difficult tasks and have the skills of cutting and sewing, you can also afford a more complex model - a soft foam sofa. The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- To begin with, a drawing is made.
- Marks are made on a piece of foam rubber in accordance with the drawing.
- The side parts are sewn together.
- Then a cover is made and the foam "frame" is covered with a cloth.
- A blanket or fur lining is additionally placed on the bottom, but this is at your request or at the request of your pet.
You can come up with the idea of a couch yourself, relying on the materials at hand. So, for example, an old pillow, polystyrene, a cardboard box, a stool that is no longer used for its intended purpose, and much more is quite suitable for building a sleeping place for a cat.
If not one cat lives in your house, but a whole cat dynasty, you will not be able to do with one sleeping place. A good option in this situation is a bunk wooden bed. This model looks very unusual, and it will be able to decorate any interior.
Bunk sofas have their own requirements:
- The structure should be as stable as possible, because cats will jump on it, possibly play. Therefore, ideally, a two-tier couch should be screwed to the floor in order to avoid falls and other troubles.
- You need to install such a bed where it will be convenient for both pets. If they prefer dark secluded corners for relaxation, then the couch, installed near the window, will always be empty.
- The distance between the upper bottom shelf should be about 40 centimeters, then the pets will feel comfortable there, and it will be convenient for them to climb in and out.
- Ladders and scratching posts are best mounted separately. During sleep, cats will definitely not use such devices, but the degree of comfort will significantly decrease.
Wooden bunk beds are complemented by purchased or homemade mattresses. Choose ones that are easy to wash and dry quickly.
As you can see, in order to choose or make a suitable sleeping place for cats with your own hands, it will take time, energy and imagination. By choosing the right shape and starting materials, you will provide your pet with a comfortable lounger, and you will save yourself from additional cleaning of sofas and armchairs.
