How to make a phone stand
Modern telephones have long ceased to be solely means of communication, having acquired many useful functions. Because of this, it is important that the device is always visible and can be used comfortably in various positions.
What is a phone stand for?
Basically, the phone stand is used for convenience and safety reasons and is relevant in the following situations:
- When looking for a phone. Most modern smartphones are small in size, and therefore can easily get lost in an apartment or even on a desktop. In this case, the stand allows you to keep the device in sight at all times.
- When driving a car. The stand allows you to respond to calls and view routes without being distracted from driving for a safer driving experience.
- In communication salons. Stands of this type allow the phones to be positioned so that the buyer has the opportunity to view them from all sides. They effectively optimize the workspace, allowing you to accommodate many models.
- To watch the video. Smartphones are often used as media centers for watching videos, and it is more convenient to do this when the phone can not be held in your hands. The stand maintains the optimal position of the screen, allowing the wearer to sit comfortably.
Types of stands
Coasters may vary in material of manufacture. There are the following options:
- Metal. Such an accessory is distinguished by its high strength, wear resistance and a long service life. Moreover, it is difficult to make it yourself, and the cost of finished products will be the highest.
- Wood. Quite popular and more accessible material. Bamboo and ash are most often used for the manufacture of holders. They can be painted and decorated, or have an emphasized natural wood texture.
- Ceramics. These coasters are elegant but extremely fragile. Often they have a bizarre and original shape, such as animals or geometric shapes.
- Textile. A convenient home option, which is a small pillow of a special shape or a soft toy.
- Plastic. This material is versatile. Holders of any shape and color are made from it.
- Paper. The most accessible material for self-production, which is not distinguished by high performance indicators.
Note! The stand does not have to look like a free-standing structure. Often it is attached directly to the phone or its case.
The following types of stands can be distinguished, depending on their purpose:
- Tabletop. They hold devices of different sizes, making them versatile. They usually take the form of a plate mounted on a table and a clamp that serves to hold the gadget.
- Universal. These holders have a flexible mount that allows them to be mounted on a variety of surfaces. They can be used anywhere.
- Automotive.They can either be in the form of a holder suitable for a smartphone of a certain size, or contain a magnetic mount. Its second part is glued to the phone case, providing a secure fit while driving.
Note! The stands can be made in various styles, so it is advisable to choose them based on the design features of the room where they will be located.
How to make a do-it-yourself phone stand
From paper
This paper phone stand is made using origami technique. It requires one A4 sheet of the desired color, scissors and a ruler.
The work process is as follows:
- Cut a square with a side of 20 cm.
- Fold square. First, the fold is made in half horizontally, then vertically. After that, the workpiece needs to be expanded.
- Fold the edges of the sheet from both sides to the middle. It is important to do this symmetrically. Bends are smoothed with a ruler.
- Form pyramids. To do this, the upper right corner is folded forward diagonally, to the middle of the workpiece, and then unfolds. The procedure is repeated in the same way with the lower right and both left corners. All folds are ironed with a ruler.
- Bend the edges. The resulting upper right corner should be bent inward diagonally. After that, the whole structure is compressed with an accordion on the right side. The folds are ironed with a ruler and tucked under the folded corner. A similar procedure is repeated with the upper left corner.
- Turn the product over and bend it down in the middle.
If desired, the finished stand can be coated with watercolor paint and glossy varnish.
Made of cardboard
This stand will require:
- micro-corrugated cardboard sheet;
- paper and printer (optional);
- ruler;
- stationery knife.
The template for the stand can be either printed or drawn independently. This is done on paper, since the corrugated board is about 3 mm thick.
The procedure is as follows:
- Glue the template to a sheet of cardboard.
- Cut out the parts of the stand using a ruler and a utility knife.
Note! The use of scissors is not recommended as the cut will be uneven due to the high thickness of the material.
- Connect the two parts of the stand by inserting them into the grooves.
- Fix the position of the stand with the internal latches. This will give it more rigidity and strength.
From other materials
A more reliable and original option would be a wooden stand. To make it, you do not need specific skills, and the set of tools is small:
- table saw;
- sandpaper;
- linseed oil;
- brushes.
Any available wood can be used, such as oak, maple or pine. The order of work is as follows:
- Cut the board. The dimensions of the stand are determined by the dimensions of the phone and personal wishes. The optimal size range is from 14x8 cm to 16x9 cm.
- Cut the groove. To do this, the saw blade must be positioned so that the cut goes to the middle of the board.
Note! The smaller the slot, the worse the phone will be fixed.
To widen the cut, make 3-4 new cuts next to the first. Their number depends on the thickness of the device.
- Cutting the angle of inclination. This needs to be done on one side of the groove so that you can install the smartphone with a slight tilt. It is not necessary to set the exact angle, simply sawing off small portions of the angle to obtain the optimum tilt.
Important! The angle should not be made too large, as this will affect the reliability of fixation.
- Grinding. It is necessary to eliminate the unevenness of the cut obtained when tearing out the sawn pieces during the formation of the groove. For effective smoothing, a small block with a width equal to the width of the groove should be wrapped with sandpaper and then used for sanding.
- Final cover. The stand needs to be coated with linseed oil and allowed to soak. If desired, the product can be painted or varnished.
Original stand ideas
As a stand, you can use materials such as:
- Clips for paper. To do this, a pair of clamps are attached to a piece of cardboard. The smartphone is fixed in the "ears".
- Shell. Choose a shell of a suitable size and cover the surface that will come into contact with the device with liquid nails, rubber glue or acrylic plasticine.
- Jar. It can be either a simple can or a highly decorative product. The main thing is to find the right size.
- Wine corks. You will need 20 plugs, which are glued to each other in a row and in columns. First, a blank is formed for the back wall, then for the front. The bottom is glued gradually by applying the plugs one at a time. In the end, all the details are collected.
Pros and cons of a homemade stand
The following advantages of self-manufacturing of the stand can be distinguished:
- high production speed;
- minimum cost;
- originality and uniqueness.
The disadvantages include the unreliability of simple designs and the need for additional tools for more complex ones.
When deciding how to make a do-it-yourself phone stand, you should take into account the weight and dimensions of the device. If a suitable material is chosen, then the design will increase the comfort of using a smartphone.
