How to make a skirt out of jeans with your own hands
It's no secret that torn or worn-out clothes are usually ruthlessly thrown away, although they could still come in handy. We are talking not only about unnecessary jeans, first gathering dust in the closet and then going to the trash can, but also those that, being new, deteriorate for various reasons.
However, if the fabric is in good condition, can something useful be sewn from it? Of course, arranging another shopping tour is great, while making a skirt out of jeans is much more interesting and practically free.
Why you shouldn't throw your old jeans away
In the household, something is constantly required: kitchen towels, some kind of rugs, bedspreads, all kinds of covers - this can be enumerated endlessly. Therefore, old trousers or a jacket can be a source of material for such things. Due to their properties, old jeans may well find a second life in the form of a kitchen potholder or an “indestructible” apron for dirty work.
A rug in the hallway, a stylish wallet, a pillow for needles - is it really necessary to buy all this? A simple example: in every home you need such an item as a bag - after all, everyone goes to the shops. Why not make it out of old pants or make your own jeans into a skirt. In most cases, this is not as difficult as it sounds. Moreover, the scope for imagination here is not limited by anything, there would be time and desire.
Denim: features
Appearing at the end of the 19th century, denim quickly gained worldwide popularity due to its durability and unpretentiousness. This state of affairs continues to this day!
It is most valued for its advantages:
- Natural origin - made mainly from cotton.
- Wear resistance.
- Keeps warm well.
- Allows the body to "breathe".
- Perfectly processed.
- Slightly crumpled.
- Does not get electrified.
Known disadvantages:
- Shedding heavily during washing.
- Has a high degree of shrinkage.
- It can deform over time (loses its shape).
Diy old jeans skirt
In most cases, such a rework is not overwhelming. A basic skill of working with a needle and scissors is enough. It all depends only on the idea and intention to bring the matter to the end. Unfortunately, perseverance and patience will be needed here. However, even if it doesn’t turn out quite the way we wanted it, it can always be attributed to an artistic idea.
Additional Information! Today, even well-known companies are not afraid to experiment and produce their products in the style of “I am a craftswoman with my mother” - so you should not worry too much about the fact that the clothes were sewn somehow “wrong”.
Classic version
It is assumed that this will be a fairly short skirt (straight cut), at least revealing the knees.
In general, you can do-it-yourself jeans into a skirt using the following procedure:
- Decide on the length. It should be remembered that the allowance will need to add another two or three centimeters to the measured one.
- Dissolve the inner seam.
- Open the center seam near the zipper.
- Connect both parts. Turn fabric right side in, fold over edges and pinch.
- Sew side seams. It is better to use a sewing machine here.
- Finish the center seam. To do this, parts of the pants must be overlapped and machined.
- Form the bottom. Cut off the excess, and tuck the rest a little and process the edge. You can make additional edging from the remnants of the fabric - it will look like a collar.
Model with a wedge with a seam
This option is good when a skirt from old jeans with your own hands should be made quickly and without much tweaks. The general principles of preparing the pants are similar to those described earlier. The only difference is that the opposite ends do not overlap deeply, but fasten along the seam.
The resulting opening in the form of a triangle can be closed with part of the remnants: cut off a piece of fabric so that it covers the slot, protruding slightly beyond the edges and sew or stitch this section. The excess will be cut off when processing the bottom. In principle, this gap is allowed and not closed, here everyone decides for himself.
Flared skirt
In this case, the top (waist part with a snake) is not needed, since it will be quite possible to make a flared skirt out of jeans from only trousers. The only difficulty is the pattern, which must be made in the form of a trapezoid. To build it, measurements of the waist (top), hips (bottom) and the desired length are used. In this case, everything, with the exception of the length, must be divided by 4.
Further, everything is not so difficult: rip and iron the jeans, arrange the pattern so that you can cut a cut along it four times, then cut everything off, combine the parts and sweep. For the belt, you can take an elastic band, which also needs to be trimmed with jeans. Try it on, fix it, try it on again and sew on a typewriter.
How to make jeans into a mini skirt with your own hands
This option is not much different from the classic or with a triangle. The only difference is in the level of courage that will ultimately determine the length.
Boho style
This style is good because it allows you to "legally" combine the incompatible. You can make the same mini-skirt and sew the hem from the robe to it. Or attach a light bottom to the dark top.
Among the most common ideas is a "cross between" jeans and a sundress, chintz or even a wedding dress. In principle, it is allowed to combine different fabrics. The main thing is not to go too far beyond the limits.
How to make a patchwork skirt out of jeans
An excellent solution if none of the pants fit the whole tailoring. In this case, it is enough to simply connect parts from different trousers. You can go even further and cut neat rags, from which you can then "collect" the skirt.
A "striped" option would also be a good idea - you need to cut off parts of the legs from different jeans and connect them in series, gaining the desired length. Again, it all depends on imagination and possibilities.
What will old jeans do?
With the proper approach, you can make more than just a rug or a napkin out of old pants. How about upholstery for a chair or bed for a cat? The top of your trousers or the bottom of a jacket with pockets will make an excellent organizer for small items or a stylish children's backpack.
Since not everyone is interested in making a denim skirt from old jeans today, many housewives prefer to expand the field for experiments, making:
- Serving accessories.
- Baskets for remotes from household appliances.
- Pillows.
- Plaids.
- Unusual jewelry.
- Gift wrapping.
- Kids toys.
- Stylish covers for books and albums.
It turns out that worn-out things can be put into action. Of course, knowing how to make a skirt out of jeans with your own hands will not save you from buying new things - it will not replace an exclusive from a newfangled boutique. But it will be a thing made with love. Let it be for some little things, even for wearing around the house - it is not so important. The main thing is to be able to feel like the Creator, and this is worth a lot!
