How to fix blinds on a window
Blinds are a beautiful, practical, yet relatively inexpensive product. However, if they cannot be installed correctly, there will only be problems. This article will tell you how to hang blinds on the window so that they serve and please you for the entire period of time given by the manufacturer.
Why are blinds needed
Now on sale there are a variety of models (horizontal blinds, roller blinds, vertical, etc.), they are able to satisfy the needs of almost all buyers.
Most often, blinds are purchased for such purposes.
Convenient lighting control from the street
Products allow you to very accurately change the flow of sunlight into the room, you just need to make the angle of inclination of the lamellas slightly different.
Save space
This is especially true for small apartments. Curtains, all the more dense, require a significant amount of space around.
Desires to simplify and facilitate window care
It is enough to periodically wipe many models with a damp cloth and that's it. The curtains have to be removed, washed, etc.
Opportunities to ventilate the room, keeping invisible from prying eyes
The curtains have to be pulled back and through the window panes you can see everything that is happening in the room. For the owner of the blinds, it is enough to turn the slats to the appropriate angle and the air from the street will pass freely, while nothing is visible inside.
Opportunities to decorate your home
The mentioned sun protection designs look good in all modern and many classic interior styles.
Desires to save
Blinds rarely break and have a very long service life. Naturally, for this you need to follow all the rules of operation and care of products, then the blinds will serve without breakdowns for more than one year.
How to hang blinds on plastic windows
Mounting blinds on plastic windows is possible with or without drilling. The first method is safer, but less popular. Many people are simply afraid to make holes in their windows.
Important. Exactly how to attach blinds to a plastic window may depend on the specific features of both the blinds and the window profile.
Read the instructions for both of them carefully.
How to take measurements
General rules for taking measurements:
- No rounding of measured values, only their exact values down to millimeters.
- Use a steel tape, only it can give the desired accuracy.
- Check the measured value in several places.A window, even a plastic one, does not have an ideal shape, and errors can seriously affect the functionality of the blinds.
Measurement of the window for the installation of horizontal blinds on the opening:
- Measure the width and height of the opening in at least three locations. The highest figure should be taken as the final value.
- Add 1 cm to the width.
- Add 5 cm to the height.
Measurement for installing horizontal blinds in the opening:
- Measure the width and height. Take the highest value as a basis.
- Subtract 1 cm from the width.
- Subtract 1 cm from the height.
Measurement for installing horizontal blinds on the sash:
- Measure the width and height of the sash at several locations. Take the highest value for the final value.
- Add 1cm to the width.
- Add 3 cm to the height.
Measurement for installing vertical blinds on the opening:
- Measure the width and height.
- Add 20 cm to the width.
- If you are installing blinds on the ceiling, then the minimum distance from the top of the window to the ceiling should be added to the height. If you are installing blinds on a wall, add at least 10 cm to the height.
Measurement for installing vertical blinds in the opening:
- Measure the width and height of the opening. Take the greatest value of both.
- Subtract 1 cm from the width.
- From the height, you need to subtract 2-3 cm.
Important. The blind control mechanism must be on the opposite side from the handle.
Fasteners without drilling
It can be done using double-sided tape or special brackets for plastic windows. If you stopped at the first, then the surface of the frame must be degreased (for example, alcohol or acetone) and be warm (you can use a hairdryer). Special brackets can be put on the window sash or attached to it with tape.
Installing blinds on double-sided tape:
- Assemble the bracket. How to do this can be found in the detailed guide. It usually comes with a set.
- Layout the width. This will avoid re-peeling the bracket and significantly reducing the quality of the fastener.
- Glue the brackets in accordance with the markings and insert the upper blind strip into them. Ready.
Installation of blinds on special plastic brackets, fastened with tape:
- Make markings where the hooks will be.
- Assemble the blinds as directed in the instructions for them.
- Degrease and dry the surface at the designated attachment points.
- Cut out small pieces of masking tape and peel off the protective covering from one side.
- Connect the plastic bracket to the holder.
- Make a preliminary fitting in the place where the bracket will be located.
- Mark this place with a pencil.
- Remove the protective film from the bracket and attach it to the window sash.
- Press down on the tape as firmly as possible so that it adheres as tightly as possible.
- Snap the clamp to the end position.
- Do the other side in the same way.
- Hang up the chain mechanism and insert the roller blind. Ready.
Drilled fasteners
Important. Be sure to make sure before starting work that when folded, the blinds will not interfere with the free opening and closing of the window and that the surrounding objects (for example, heating appliances) will not interfere with the use of the sun protection structure.
Now about how you can attach blinds to plastic windows using a drill. It is done this way:
- Determine the exact location of the upper horizontal louver strip.
- Place the support frame at the very top of the sash frame. The plane of the glass unit and the plane of the frame must have the same depth. If this is not the case, you will have to use U-shaped pads to eliminate the gap.
- Exactly mark the places where you intend to make the holes for the screws.
- Punch some holes.
- Secure the support bar by drilling it exactly in the places where you worked with the drill before and screw in the self-tapping screws.
- In the lower glazing bead of the window sash, make a couple of holes with a diameter of no more than 2.5 mm along the edges. They should be located strictly in accordance with the exit of the line from the supporting structure of the blinds.
- Insert special plugs into the drilled holes. They should come with a blinds kit.
- Thread the fishing line through them, pull it and tie it in knots.
- Slip the platbands over the carrier strip and check how they work.
- Install the blade chain and flexible arm wherever you like. This is usually done using special fasteners, which are glued to the wall using ordinary glue.
How to hang horizontal blinds
The main thing is to follow the instructions exactly.
- Unpack the product carefully and remove the cover from the curtain rod.
- Install glazing bead correctors on the left and right. Their number should be such that, after installation, the back side of the curtain rod of the blind does not come into contact with the glass.
- Place the curtain rod against the sash and mark the places for drilling holes.
- Drill holes in the profile in accordance with the markings.
- Fix the curtain rod to the screws. On them, it will be fastened much more reliably than on scotch tape.
- Drill a hole in the lower glazing bead. This is required to secure the line.
- Put the line in the hole and place the plug.
- Stretch the line and cut off any excess.
- Fix the curtain rod.
- Make holes for the control chain.
- Install the chain retainer.
Important. Strongly, to the limit, the stretched line can interfere with the normal operation of the product. Monitor your efforts.
How to hang vertical blinds
There is nothing difficult in this either, it is even easier than putting horizontal ones.
- Unpack the product.
- Apply the markings where you plan to fix the blinds: on the wall, ceiling, frame or opening.
- Fix the brackets according to the markings.
- Attach the cornice to the brackets. In this case, a characteristic click should occur.
- Hang the slats on the runners.
Blinds care
The general rules are:
- Several times a month, the lamellas should be wiped with a dry cloth or vacuumed.
- Do a wet surface cleaning once a month.
- Lubricate moving parts every few months.
The rest of the care features depend on the material of the lamellas.
Aluminum can be washed with any chemical cleaning agents; in the absence of these, it is allowed to process it with a vinegar solution.
Wood is strongly recommended to be cleaned with dry cloth only. The tree is afraid of water.
Plastic ones are washed in the same way as metal ones, but strong hot water should be avoided. High temperatures can affect the structure of the plastic.
Fabric slats are the most picky. Wet care more often than once a year is contraindicated for them. Either vacuum or use a soft-bristled dry brush. Stains can be removed with a regular school eraser.
Now you know everything you need to know about blinds for their installation and daily use. If there is something unclear about the question of how to hang the blinds, do not get to work until you clarify. We hope you succeed.
