Description and instructions for a geyser coffee maker
What to do when you want to fully enjoy an invigorating drink, to reveal all the taste features of different types of coffee, but there is no way to purchase a coffee machine? There are many alternatives, but the best option for home use is a geyser coffee maker.
What is a geyser coffee maker
Coffee made in a coffee maker is distinguished by both its aroma and well-developed taste. This is due to the extraction of essential oils during the preparation process, which is achieved by passing water through a coffee tablet under pressure.
The geyser coffee maker consists of two threaded reservoirs, upper and lower, and a funnel filter. Moreover, it can be electric, but this does not change the overall design.
The bottom tank, or flask, is the base of the coffee maker that holds cold water. It is equipped with a safety valve, which is necessary to release steam if it exceeds the upper value.
A filter funnel is inserted into the lower flask, into which ground coffee is placed. In this case, the funnel nose is at a distance of 3-6 mm from the bottom of the flask. Sometimes there can be two filters, they are also often removed.
The upper tank holds the finished beverage. It also has a funnel with a filter, spout upwards. Here, the filter, held in place by a removable silicone gasket, limits the flow of coffee particles into the beverage.
Note! The bottom tank is always made only of metal - aluminum or steel. The upper one can also be made of glass or plastic.
The principle of operation of a geyser coffee maker is as follows:
- In the lower tank, the water heats up to form steam.
- The steam pressure displaces hot water, which passes through the filter funnel, which contains the coffee.
- Passing through the ground coffee, water extracts soluble substances, and then is pushed upward, entering the upper tank.

Pros and cons of a geyser coffee maker
A geyser is a fairly popular type of home coffee machine. Its advantages include the following:
- Affordable price. A good model can be purchased for one and a half to two thousand, which cannot be said about other types of coffee makers.
- Convenience.When cooking, there is no need to constantly monitor the process, and closer to the end of cooking, the geyser will notify about this with a kind of murmur.
- The quality of the coffee. The drink turns out to be stronger and more concentrated, in fact, it is a pure espresso, only in a larger volume, which depends on the size of the coffee maker. In addition, the resulting coffee contains no coffee grounds.
But, of course, there are a number of disadvantages, namely:
- Inability to control and change the strength and volume of the drink. Each model is designed for a strictly defined amount of ground coffee and water, for example, for two or four cups of espresso, and to get a different final result, you need to purchase a different model.
- Difficulty in leaving. Due to its design, the geyser is difficult to thoroughly clean. In addition, most often the material of its manufacture is aluminum, the dishes from which cannot be washed in a dishwasher (and also used on an induction cooker). It is also necessary to periodically replace the filter and gasket, as their wear significantly affects the quality of the coffee and the performance of the device.
- Difficulty in the selection of grind. It should be such that, on the one hand, it does not get stuck in the filter, and on the other hand, it makes it possible to fully reveal the taste and aroma of the drink.
Note! One serving of espresso is 30 ml.
To better understand what this coffee maker is like at work, you can read the reviews of those using it. So, most often they note the following:
- the best possible alternative to drinking good coffee at home;
- strong dependence on grinding;
- smack of metal in aluminum models;
- compactness and noiselessness;
- small drink yield;
- intuitive use;
- strong heating of the bottom, which does not allow washing immediately and cooking several portions in a row.
Note! To get rid of the metallic taste will allow the formation of a coffee film, for which it is worth not washing the upper tank, but simply rinsing.
How to use a geyser coffee maker
The process of making coffee in a geyser is quite simple. However, in order to get a really good drink, you need to take into account all the nuances of how to use a geyser coffee maker.
Important! It is not recommended to prepare flavored coffees in a geyser coffee maker, as their taste is not revealed, and the drink turns out to be simply bitter. This is due to the coating of such grains with a small film, which gives the aroma. The same goes for beans that are too dark roasted, although natural oils come to the surface there.
You can use the following scheme:
- Grind setting. The ideal option is to grind the coffee just before brewing, using freshly roasted beans. This will maximize the taste of the variety. The grind should be slightly coarser than that used for an espresso machine, but less than for drip coffee makers. The larger the volume of the geyser, the coarser the grinding should be, because this will help to avoid over-extraction. Fine grind is not used due to the fact that coffee particles clog the filter.
- Bottom tank filling. It is advisable to use clean cold water for cooking. It should not be poured to the brim, however, it is also better not to pour too little. The emergency valve can be used as a guide.
- Filling the filter funnel. The entire funnel must be filled with ground coffee.If you want to get a richer taste, then you can crush it slightly, but do not ram it.
- Cooking. It is better to brew coffee over moderate heat, when using gas - on the smallest burner. If urgency is needed, then you can first turn on a strong fire, and after warming up, reduce it. Ideally, you need to remove the geyser from the burner before the gurgling starts, because this means that instead of water, fiery steam begins to pass through the coffee tablet, which greatly affects the taste of the drink. After removal, you need to stop the extraction, for which the lower part of the coffee maker can be placed under cold water or placed on a wet towel. This leaves a small amount of water in the lower tank, and this is normal.
Note! Since most geyser coffee makers are made of aluminum, it is impossible to use them on induction hobs. In this case, you can either purchase a steel model or use the pan as a support for a geyser.
Why might not work
A geyser coffee maker is a fairly simple device, and therefore all malfunctions, as a rule, are associated with improper operation. The most common problems include the following:
- Steam escapes during cooking. It occurs due to insufficient tightness of the structure, so you just need to tighten the coffee maker tighter;
- Water cannot pass through the filter. The reason for this is either the use of coffee that is too finely ground, or the filter is clogged, which must be thoroughly rinsed after each brewing;
- The outlet of the drink does not correspond to that stated in the instructions. In this case, you need to carefully monitor the amount of water poured into the tank;
- The drink has a bitter, burnt taste. May be due to being on the burner for too long or poor rinsing after use;
- A suspension appeared in the coffee. Either the grind is too fine or it is time to replace the filter and gasket.
A geyser coffee maker is the best option for making coffee at home. It is easy to use and, if used correctly, will produce a delicious and aromatic invigorating drink.
