How to sew a bonbon blanket
There are not too many interesting and beautiful things for the interior. And if for someone the ideal set is considered a set of "accessories" in the classic style, then for others there is no limit to perfection and boundaries for the embodiment of bold fantasies. Perhaps it is the latter who will appreciate the Bonbon blanket.
What is it and what is it eaten with?
Initially, this blanket was intended solely for decorative use. The "patchwork" technique in one form or another exists among almost all peoples. Bonbon is a variation of this technique. At one time, the fabric was sorely lacking, and every free piece was used in the work. Therefore, the blankets turned out to be very multi-colored and varied in texture.
Today this model has several names: "Bonbon", "Biscuit", "Marshmallow", "blanket from poufs" and the like. Since modern craftswomen have no shortage of material, the blankets are also very effective and presentable. Even if the accessory is made of multi-colored fabrics, the palette is carefully selected. The technology of creating a Bonbon blanket is considered a kind of decorative and applied art, and the result looks more textured and unusual, compared to the usual patchwork.
Such an unusual blanket has two sides: the seamy, smoother (probably, it would be more accurate to say, flat), and the front, consisting of square fragments of the same size. The edge of the blanket is designed in different ways: it can be just a wide edging, or lace braid can be used in addition to the edging, or a frill with small pompoms.
Practical or just pretty?
Blanket "Bonbon" is not just a unique thing, but also a practical accessory. Such a model will easily become a spectacular interior accent, emphasizing the sense of style of its owners. Moreover, the blanket will reliably cover and warm you.
The product is truly multifunctional:
- Can be used for its intended purpose as a blanket.
- Someone prefers to use this accessory like a blanket or bedspread.
- Depending on the size, it can easily cope with the role of a cape for a chair, armchair, ottoman.
- Quickly transforms into a cocoon blanket, safely hiding you in an armchair or sofa.
- For a nursery, it can be used as a rug for a toddler who has just learned to sit. Tiny ottomans will cushion your fall.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any model, this blanket has its own strengths and weaknesses. "Bonbon" are rightfully considered exclusive, they are not created en masse, which means that, having such an accessory, you can be sure that you have acquired a unique thing of its kind. After all, even if your model is made by a needlewoman who made your neighbor happy with the same blanket, it will not be absolutely identical. And that's the beauty of hand-made.
And due to the fact that fabric of different colors can be used in the work, you can order (or sew yourself) a blanket with any pattern: from primitive diagonal stripes to some kind of ornament.
Advantages:
- In terms of thermal properties, they are not inferior to ordinary blankets. Reliably protect from cold and drafts.
- Thanks to the use of modern lightweight fillers, such an unusual blanket is lightweight, so it can be used for both adults and children.
- Most of them are made from natural materials, and, as a result, are ideal even for allergy sufferers or very sensitive people.
- Large size range available. Bonbon blankets are made for newborns, small children, adolescents, as well as for adults, and even for the elderly.
- The models are provided with a natural lining on the seamy side, which provides additional comfort while sleeping.
- There is always a choice: buy just a blanket or a complete set, which includes additional covers, as well as pillows, either made using the Bonbon technique, or conventional models, but in the appropriate color scheme.
- As a filler, modern materials are used, which differ not only in light weight, but also resistance to the appearance of all kinds of microorganisms, as well as easy to clean.
- For blankets made using the bonbon technique, dense textiles are used that do not allow dust to pass through and does not contribute to the appearance of dust mites, due to which a child (and an adult) may experience redness and itching.
- Such blankets are very mobile, if desired, they can be rolled up very tightly and put away in any drawer or niche where they take up a minimum of space.
- Not only a professional craftsman, but also a novice needlewoman will be able to create their own masterpiece called "Bonbon". The execution technique is quite simple (especially since there is an accessible instruction), and, at the same time, it is interesting. So you can secure yourself some unforgettable evenings doing what you love with a practical end result.
- This is a wonderful gift for loved ones. You will not only provide them with the necessary and beautiful little thing, but also give a piece of yourself.
- For the most part, Bonbon blankets are easy to clean, they are even machine washed on a delicate cycle at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees.
- Finally, such an unusual blanket will decorate any interior. Besides "Bonbon" always looks stylish and expensive. So, even hand-made skeptics are thinking about purchasing such an accessory.
Unfortunately, there were also some drawbacks. Although, these are rather not drawbacks in the full negative sense of the word, but the features of using the blanket. For example, many are accustomed to using regular blankets to complement the mattress, increasing the softness of the mattress. A bonbon will not work for this purpose, since the uneven surface of the blanket interferes with the correct position of the back. This is especially critical for babies and young children.
The next nuance is the limited form options. Since the blanket is made of square elements, in the finished form it can be either square or rectangular. Also, the restrictions apply to the size of the elements themselves: if you make the ottomans too large, the blanket will look rough and unattractive, and the drawing will become completely incomprehensible.
Another nuance concerns the drying of the blanket. After washing, you can't just hang it up and wait for it to dry. Dry such a model only in a horizontal position, avoiding the use of any heating appliances or an iron.
It will take time and perseverance to make a blanket with an unusual name "Bonbon", but the result will definitely please you. Such models fit very harmoniously into the "girly" interior of the nursery, but the boys, most likely, will hardly appreciate the uniqueness of the model. Therefore, if there are no little princesses in your family, and there are only growing knights, it is better to purchase an ordinary blanket for them.
Varieties
Blankets with ottomans are made of two types: for children and for adults. The difference between the models in colors, finishes, and, of course, in size.
For children's models, they use fabrics with cartoon prints, or in delicate colors (pink and white, mint, etc.). Very often, blankets for children are produced in a set and differ in the different texture of each product, for example, blankets using the Bonbon technique, and curly pillows, but made using the usual technique and in harmony with the color of the blanket.
Blankets for adults are made in more subdued colors. If the material is not monochromatic, then this is a floral print or an inconspicuous ornament. Although, in fairness, it should be noted that there are no strict rules in choosing the color of the material.
If you like bright colors - use them, just make sure that the interior is not too overloaded with multicolor.
The standard adult marshmallow blankets are complemented by regular pillowcases made from pouf textiles. In this case, the kit turns out to be interesting and not "flashy".
How to sew a blanket yourself
It is not at all difficult to make a bonbon blanket with your own hands. It is worth noting that there are at least two ways to create a spectacular Bonbon blanket.
The first way
It all starts with a diagram and a pattern. Draw a diagram of the future masterpiece on a separate sheet of paper. The more detailed the scheme is, the easier it will be to implement it. Carefully note not only the sizes of the ottomans, but also the colors and the final design you want to get.
After that, we proceed to the main part of the work. We cut out squares of two sizes. For example, one with a side of 15 cm, and the other, with a side of 21 cm. They are cleaved together in this way: to reduce the side of a larger square, folds are made. Their number can be from 2 to 4. Then three sides of the square are sewn, and the fourth is left for subsequent turning out and filling with filler. Now they can be sewn together on a typewriter. Having made the required number of "ottomans", they are stitched onto the base fabric, and then the edge of the blanket is processed in any way convenient for you.
Second way
This option is considered to be simpler in execution, only the blanket turns out to be monochromatic and not very embossed.
The fabric on the front side is drawn into squares and sewn along the outlined lines. Only in each square you need to remember to lay the folds, otherwise you will end up with a regular quilt. Gauze is sewn to the seamy side. Then a hole is made in each purl gauze square, and the squares are filled with holofiber or padding polyester. After all the squares have been filled, the purl is sewn together. At the final stage, the edge is processed.
Blanket "Bonbon" is a stylish and functional little thing. It will decorate your interior and will delight your loved ones if you decide to present them with a handmade gift.
