How and how can you remove the smell of urine from the couch
No matter how much the owners love their pets, they sometimes do small dirty tricks. For example, puppies have poor control over the urination process, so from time to time they cannot wait until they walk. And it's good if the result is a puddle on the floor.
But sometimes dogs leave marks on upholstered furniture. It is impossible to leave this “aroma”. Fortunately, there are folk methods and special remedies that you can use. Here's how to get rid of the smell of dog urine from your couch and floor.
Remedies to remove dog urine odor from couch
You can use purchased or traditional methods. Each option has its supporters and opponents. Some people think that the purchased products consist of “all of chemicals”, but, in fact, this is not the case. There are many natural formulations that are completely harmless to humans and pets. The main thing is to carefully read the description and ingredients when purchasing.
Floor products
You can remove odors from the floor with a regular cleaning product. They contain components that neutralize unpleasant odors and destroy bacteria. A fresh urine stain should first be removed with a cloth moistened with plain water, and then washed twice with a special product.
If the smell is strong, you can increase the concentration. Usually add up to 1 cap to a bucket of water, therefore, in this case, you will need to dilute 1 cap in half the volume of water and wash out the place where there was a puddle.
Aroma neutralizers
Pet stores and some supermarkets sell urine odor neutralizers. The way they are used is usually indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions. Many of them are used according to the scheme:
- wipe the surface with the agent;
- let dry;
- wash with water with the addition of a product;
- wash with clean water.
Too pungent odor (for example, from an old puddle) is removed in two passes.
There are also aerosol odor neutralizers. They are sprayed onto the cleaned surface.
Bleach and chlorine-based cleaning compounds
Many people trust a proven remedy - bleach. Of the advantages - it quickly neutralizes unpleasant odors. But it has significant drawbacks - it is its own pungent smell and volatile elements in the composition. But if a puddle of odorous urine flaunts on the floor or furniture, and apart from bleach, there is nothing at hand, it is better not to hesitate.
Dilute it in a ratio of 200 ml per bucket of water. After 20 minutes after treatment, you need to wash the floor / furniture with clean water.
There are also chlorine-containing universal products. They are bred strictly according to the directions on the packaging.After treatment, the floor is also washed with clean water and a fresh rag.
Folk remedies against urine odor
In addition to industrial tools, you can use the helpers. We will tell you how else to remove the smell of dog urine from the couch.
Vinegar
A remedy that is in almost every home. 9% vinegar is diluted in a 1: 1 ratio with dowa. This composition is used to treat the urine stain, then wash it off with water. You can repeat the procedure if necessary.
Important! Before using vinegar to remove stains, try it on a small piece of upholstery. If the fabric dye is acid resistant, this method is acceptable.
Hydrogen peroxide
Suitable only for light-colored sofa upholstery, as a whitish stain may remain on dark and bright fabrics.
A bottle of 3% peroxide is poured into a container with a spray bottle, half a teaspoon of a cleaning agent or liquid soap is added, diluted with 100 ml of water, shaken.
Sprinkle the stained area with soda, spray a peroxide-based product on top. Foam should form on the surface. It is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a slightly damp cloth. As a result of a chemical reaction, the smell of urine will quickly dissolve without a trace.
Lemon acid
You can use citric acid in a ratio of 1 tsp. per 100 ml of water or freshly squeezed juice of a whole lemon, diluted 1: 1 with water. The composition is poured onto the stain and left to dry completely. It is not necessary to remove it.
Important! On bright upholstery, it is worth trying the product in advance, on an inconspicuous area.
In addition to antiseptic treatment, lemon juice will give a pleasant aroma.
Baking soda
Another tool that is found in almost every home. Soda is diluted in a small amount of water to obtain a slurry. The mixture is applied to the stain and allowed to dry, after which it is removed with a vacuum cleaner.
A solution of potassium permanganate or iodine
These products are only suitable for floor treatment. Potassium permanganate is diluted to form a light pink solution, and iodine is added in an amount of 15 drops per liter of water.
Advice. Iodine solution is great for removing odors from wood floors.
What is contraindicated to use against urine
You should not use ammonia, as it contains similar ammonia compounds, and the unpleasant smell will only intensify.
Ordinary detergents are also poorly suited for neutralizing odors: they only mask the “aroma”, but do not remove it at the chemical level. Therefore, after a while, the smell will appear again.
