How and how can you eliminate the smell from the kitchen sink
The presence of water supply and sewerage is a blessing to which we have long been accustomed. Sinks in bathrooms, showers and kitchens help address hygiene issues. However, over time, they will require help. A signal that it is time to take action is a heavy smell from the kitchen drain; how to eliminate it - advice from home craftsmen will help.
Why does an unpleasant smell come from the sink?
The more actively we use the possibilities of sewage in the kitchen, the more often we wash vegetables, fruits, dishes, the more often we need to clean the kitchen system that has connections to the sink. Otherwise, over time, an unpleasant odor appears, which over time, if appropriate measures are not taken, can increase several times.
It will not allow the kitchen equipment to fully function, and it will become impossible to be in it at all. However, if it is not clear why the sewer from the kitchen sink smells unpleasant, you need to try to establish their causes.
- Blockage of pipes, which appeared due to deposits of fatty deposits on their walls, food debris, layering of viscous formations that hot water cannot cope with if you try to clean it with it. They not only impair the permeability of the pipe, but are also a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that cause rotting residues.
- Not only the active use of the sink, but also its inaction leads to the fact that an unpleasant smell begins to come from the pipes. This is due to the evaporation of the water barrier. If the sink is not used for a long time, the accumulated air impedes the movement of water and can even return it back.
- Violations during the installation of the siphon, leading to the failure of the hydraulic seal.
- Deformation of the corrugation, causing the opening of the water seal and the penetration of sewer gases and odors, as well as its incorrect installation.
Folk remedies for eliminating unpleasant odor
Various means are used to clean the pipes, free them from decaying deposits. To do this, there are many ways to eliminate unpleasant odors from the kitchen sink. However, often an emergency occurs at the most inopportune moment, then you can use the many times proven folk remedies.
- Baking soda is excellent at degreasing and disinfecting surfaces. Before using it, you need to clean the sewer with a plunger. After that, dilute half a glass of powder with boiling water 1: 3, pour into the sink for half an hour. If necessary, the procedure must be repeated.
- A 1: 1 combination of baking soda and heated vinegar is also suitable. The main thing is not to forget to rinse the system well with boiling water later.
- If it smells unpleasant from the sink, table salt will help cleanse well, remove grease, and eliminate the unpleasant odor. For the procedure, you will need half a glass of salt, which must be dissolved in 2 liters of boiling water, and poured into the sink. You can use salt in combination with baking soda. For the most effective results, it is best to pour the mixture overnight.
- Mustard powder will help to defeat unpleasant odors and fatty deposits. For cleaning, you need 2-3 tbsp. l. mustard and pour 1 liter of boiling water, leave for 20 minutes.
Note! Folk methods will be effective if the state of the system is not very running.
Use of special chemicals
Folk cleaning products will help at the initial stage of deterioration in work. But if this did not happen, and the hostess does not know how to remove an unpleasant odor from the sink, and the descent of water slows down, you need to use chemicals for cleaning.
Among the most commonly used:
- "Mole" - inexpensive, effective, but rather slow;
- Tiret dissolves well the organic waste accumulated in the siphon;
- Mr Muscle is used to clean gutters;
- Sanox is a soft and inexpensive long-acting gel.
- "Whiteness" is used for disinfection of effluents, dissolves corks, and cannot eliminate complex contaminants.
Using a steel cable or plunger
If all the tried and tested methods did not bring the desired result, you can apply “shock” - mechanical possibilities of solving the problem, using a plunger or a steel cable.
To do this, you need to firmly attach a stiff brush or other cleaning attachment to it, but they are only suitable for cleaning metal structures. For pipes made of plastic, it is better to use devices in a rubberized sheath.
For cleaning, you need to disconnect the corrugation, unfold the cable and advance it, gently pushing it along the pipe until it reaches the mud plug and pierces it. After that, carefully remove the cable, rinse the corrugation and drain with hot water, assemble the structure.
It is possible to try to remove an unpleasant smell from the sink with a plunger. The procedure for using it is well known to everyone. After the end of the procedure, which must be repeated several times until the plug is removed, then thoroughly rinse everything with hot water.
If you can't get rid of the plug on your own, it is better to call a specialist who will do the work quickly and efficiently.
Prevention of unpleasant odor
In order not to be helpless at the most unexpected moment in front of a sink clogged with rotten food debris and a “heavy spirit” coming from the bowels, it is worth periodically taking preventive measures that will help keep the system in working order:
- fix a siphon under the sink, instead of directly draining;
- use mesh filters that retain dirt;
- periodically rinse the pipes with hot water and soda solution;
- inspect system components to identify and eliminate leaks.
If you are planning a long trip and the sink will not be used for a long time, experts recommend pouring in a little vegetable or machine oil to prevent drying out. You can return the sink to working condition by rinsing well and removing the grease film.
In order not to face a difficult situation, cleaning must be carried out regularly, constantly removing dirt from the surface of the sink.
